The following contains major spoilers for Batman and Robin #16, on sale now from DC Comics.
Damian Wayne is discovering his own path in life, and it could drive him away from his father’s footsteps.
Batman and Robin #16 finds the eponymous duo leaping from rooftop to rooftop and conversing in one language after another, all as a part of their regular training. Unsurprisingly, Batman can tell that his young ward isn’t quite focused on the task at hand. As it turns out, skipping school isn’t the only secret that Robin has been keeping from the Dark Knight, and as disappointing as that may be, it is nothing compared to the revelation that Damian doesn’t seem to want to be a superhero whatsoever.

Damian Wayne has one of the most unexpected trajectories of any DC Comics character, having first been introduced as a concept unto himself in 1987’s Batman: Son of the Demon by Mike W. Barr and Jerry Bingham. Born to Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul, Damian’s existence was something the latter felt she needed to keep secret from the Dark Knight. To that end, Talia concocted a story in which the unborn child’s life was lost, leaving Batman to suffer in silence upon returning to Gotham City.
It wasn’t until 2006’s Batman #655 by Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert that Damian Wayne was reintroduced as a part of the primary DC Comics continuity. The modern incarnation of the character was brought to Gotham City at a young age by Talia al Ghul, who intended on exposing her child to his father’s crime-fighting lifestyle in secret. After discovering the existence of his son, Batman was quickly embroiled in numerous plots and conspiracies involving the young Damian, including Ra’s al Ghul’s plans to use his own grandson as a new vessel for his own consciousness.

One of DC’s greatest detectives (who isn’t Batman) has finally uncovered the mysterious villain behind the ongoing war against Wonder Woman.
Damian’s change of heart regarding the nature of his mission comes as a major plot point for the ongoing “Memento” storyline, which itself revolves around the serial killer of the same name. During the events of Batman and Robin #14, the eponymous duo’s appearance at a charity event held at the Sacred Heart Medical Center was met with a brazen firebombing seemingly carried out by Memento. Though Damian did everything he could to save the innocent bystanders caught in the blaze, a young girl lost her life, leaving the young Caped Crusader stricken with the kind of grief that has made him question his entire purpose as a hero.
