DC’s New Absolute Batman is The Total Opposite of The Original: “Bruce IS The Chaos”

Batman has always stood for order in a chaotic world, but that’s about to change in DC’s new Absolute Universe. Despite his numerous villains trying to destroy Gotham City or bring madness to the world, Batman has always fought to keep the city and the world safe from madness. But now, the Absolute Universe will see Batman become a force of nature and an agent of chaos, flipping his role with that of the Joker.

On X/Twitter, Absolute Batman writer Scott Snyder delved into one of the major aspects that makes Absolute Batman different from the main universe Batman. While in the main universe, Batman is trying to bring Gotham out of chaos and push order in a destructive world, Absolute Batman is the chaos that disrupts the city. The Absolute version of Gotham City seems to be a horrid dystopia, and the status quo must be destroyed.

The Absolute version of Gotham City has to be pushed to be better, and Batman is the one who is willing to do it. Scott Snyder describes him as a “force of nature” and says that “Bruce IS the chaos” in this scenario, which is a completely different interpretation of the character, and one remarkably similar to the Joker.

Absolute Batman Is Saving Gotham In A New Way

The biggest event in Bruce Wayne’s life was when he lost his parents due to a random act of crime. It’s a pure moment of chaos that destroyed his life and inspired him to spend the rest of his life fighting the chaos in Gotham City, to bring the city back from the brink of madness. Villains like the Joker are continually trying to introduce chaos to destroy the order that Batman is so desperate to maintain, and this narrative structure has existed for almost the entire time Batman has been a character.

The Absolute Universe is darker. It’s not that Gotham City is on the brink of chaos, it’s that it’s under the complete control of villains. The Joker has always wanted to introduce chaos into Batman’s world, but in a world where Gotham City is under complete totalitarian control, it’s Batman who ends up being the force of chaos. Batman has to destroy the twisted order that has been imposed on the people of Gotham City, and as Scott Snyder points out, Batman is a force of nature in his quest to push Gotham City to be better.

Batman Has Taken Joker’s Place As An Agent Of Chaos

One of the biggest questions about Absolute Batman is, if Batman is an agent of chaos, then who is the Joker? As DC has revealed, the Absolute Universe will be significantly darker than the main DC Universe. Therefore, it’s likely that if Batman has to take on the role of chaos, Joker might be one of the higher-ups in the city, working as a dark agent of order to keep the city under the control of villains. Instead of going after the criminal organizations on the street level, the Absolute Universe‘s new version of Batman will be a force of chaos that will bring Gotham City to its knees, and hopefully, push it to be a better place in the process.
