The following contains major spoilers for New Gods #1, on sale now from DC Comics.

DC’s New Gods are officially staring down a threat more ominous than Darkseid.

As New Genesis’ Highfather looks to the stars in uneasy anticipation of things to come in the pages of New Gods #1, the silence is interrupted by the arrival of Metron, who can also feel the emptiness left behind in the wake of Darkseid’s death. Unfortunately, it isn’t just a figurative sense of loss that has struck the New Gods, but a dire new prophecy. Without Darkseid, the balance of the universe itself has shifted, and the “new hand of darkness” that has risen up because of it is just the beginning.

The New Gods are pillars of the DC Comics mythos, created by industry legend Jack Kirby as the beginnings of what are now known as his Fourth World line of titles. These immensely powerful, ancient beings exist beyond ordinary space and time, standing as near unstoppable champions of science-fantasy. Split across two wildly different planetary landscapes, New Genesis and Apokolips, the New Gods are led by the rulers of their respective worlds, the gleaming Highfather Izaya and the dreaded Darkseid.

Darkseid was the very first of the New Gods who made his debut in a cameo appearance in the pages of 1970’s Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #134 by Jack Kirby and Vince Colletta. An unwavering tyrant who rules through cruelty and fear, Darkseid stands as the personification of hate itself. With his unmatched strength and impossible powers, Darkseid has left countless battlefields completely obliterated without ever lifting a finger. Throughout the vast majority of his comic book career, Darkseid has been obsessed with uncovering the Anti-Life Equation, which would afford him the power to strip every last shred of free will from all sentient life in existence.

A Cosmic DC Superhero Just Reclaimed Her Power from One of the Universe’s Strongest Entities

One of DC’s cosmic Entities has just been beaten for what might be the last time, and doing so finally set a powerful hero free from its obsession.

In the recently released DC All In Special one-shot, Darkseid’s endeavors took a turn for some particularly high-concept territory, with the villain quite literally becoming a universe unto himself. After forcefully merging with the Spectre and allowing himself to be destroyed by the heroes of the Justice League Unlimited, Darkseid was able to fully separate his consciousness from the rest of reality. This opened the door for Darkseid to not just enter the infantile alternate dimension previously known as the Elseworld, but to become one with the very fabric of its reality, transforming it and himself into what is now the Absolute Universe.
