Summary
Several villains that have already been announced for the DCU have been members of DC’s Injustice League, and it could be a team James Gunn is setting up for future movies. If that’s the case, then there are a few villains that haven’t been announced that would also be great additions to the roster. Some of these villains would be perfect against heroes that are on their way, like Booster Gold or the Green Lanterns. This team would also present upcoming DC releases with a unique opportunity.
As of now, the MCU hasn’t made one of their big threats a team of villains. Instead, they have focused mainly on individual threats who may occasionally have minions. The DCU could use the Injustice League to differentiate itself from Marvel by pitting the Justice League against their opposites. Not only would this help differentiate from the DCEU timeline, it could also help solve the problem of throwing a bunch of faceless minions at the heroes so they all stay busy, which has become a staple of Avengers movies.
10 Characters That Could Replace Darkseid As The DCU’s First Big Villain
Darkseid is the biggest DC villain of all, but there are many great villains in the DC canon who could replace him as the big bad of the DCU.
10 Lex Luthor Is A Perfect Leader For The League
Nicholas Hoult Will Play Lex Luthor In Superman: Legacy
Lex Luthor Key Facts
Enemy
Superman
Superpowers
Genius level intellect, but no superpowers
DCU Set-Up?
Debuting in Superman: Legacy in 2025
Lex Luthor typically has a tight-rope to walk in the DC Universe. He wants the public to continue adoring him, but he also wants to take down Superman. The Injustice League would offer Lex a way to plot against Superman without getting his hands dirty. Lex is also incredibly intelligent and has significant resources at his disposal. This makes him uniquely positioned to start and fund the League’s efforts and make the plans.
Luthor’s pivotal role in a new Injustice League would also allow Nicholas Hoult to take over the spiritual reins of Jesse Eisenberg, who was seemingly set up to create his own supervillain team in the Justice League‘s post-credits scene.
Superman: Legacy’s Lex Luthor Promise Can Finally Deliver What 7 Movies Failed To
A new Lex Luthor features in James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy – but how different will the villain be when compared to previous Superman movies?
9 Maxwell Lord Could Challenge Lex’s Leadership
Sean Gunn Will Play Mawell Lord In The DCU
Maxwell Lord Key Facts
Enemy
Wonder Woman & The Justice League
Superpowers
Originally none, but later telepathetic manipulation
DCU Set-Up?
Debuting in Superman: Legacy in 2025
Similar to Lex, Maxwell Lord is a clever villain with a successful business, who is already confirmed to appear in the DCU. Long-term James Gunn collaborator Sean Gunn will play the former Wonder Woman 1984 villain in Superman: Legacy, seemingly as an ally to the Justice League. At least at first. He would likely also want to be the leader of the League, and would likely butt heads with Lex due to their desire for control. This would create an interesting internal conflict among the team and show how a supervillain team can be much more dangerous than one made up of superheroes.
Pedro Pascal played Maxwell Lord in the DCEU
8 Ra’s Al Ghul Would See The League As A Means To An End
Ra’s Al Ghul’s Daughter Talia Will Likely Appear In The Brave And The Bold
Ra’s Al Ghul Key Facts
Enemy
Batman
Superpowers
Near-immortality & superhuman levels of strength, endurance & speed
DCU Set-Up?
Unconfirmed but set-up by Batman: The Brave & The Bold
Ra’s Al Ghul already has an organization of his own, the League of Assassins, however, if he thought the Injustice League could help him accomplish his missions, he would likely join up as long as it was convenient. Ra’s Al Ghul may also join the League to get Batman out of the way so he could reclaim custody of his grandson, the DCU’s Damian Wayne. Wayne’s involvement in Batman: The Brave & The Bold suggests an easy path to introduce the original villain of Nolan’s Batman Begins to the new DCU.
7 Circe’s Magic Gives The League A Powerful Advantage
Anya Chalotra Will Play Circe In Creature Commandos
Circe Key Facts
Enemy
Wonder Woman
Superpowers
Magic
DCU Set-Up?
Debuting in Creature Commandos
There isn’t much that Circe’s magic hasn’t been able to accomplish over her long DC publication history. She can blast heroes with powerful energy, and control their minds, and she has even turned Superman into a guinea pig before. Circe will be showing up in Creature Commandos, and if she sticks around, she would be a great choice to add to a supervillain team like the Injustice League.
6 Cheetah’s History With Wonder Woman Would Make Her A Complex League Member
Cheetah Previously Appeared In Wonder Woman 1984
Cheetah Key Facts
Enemy
Wonder Woman
Superpowers
Animal-like strength, speed & agility
DCU Set-Up?
No
Cheetah is one of Wonder Woman’s greatest enemies, but depending on the version the DCU uses, she may also have been one of her best friends. This complicated relationship could make Cheetah second guess some of the League’s actions if she still has some lingering affection for Diana. Having at least one member of the Injustice League with a bit of a conscience would certainly make them more interesting.
5 Mister Terrible Is The Evil Mister Terrific
Edi Gathegi Will Play Mister Terrific In Superman: Legacy
Mister Terrible Key Facts
Enemy
Mister Terrific
Superpowers
Invisibility to technology
DCU Set-Up?
No
Because Mister Terrific has already been announced for Superman: Legacy, DC has an opportunity to include his obscure villain: Mister Terrible. Mister Terrible dresses similarly to Mister Terrific, but has “Foul Play” instead of “Fair Play” written on his jacket, and he uses T-Squares instead of T-Spheres. This is exactly the type of funny and obscure comic book character that fans have come to expect from James Gunn, and he would add some laughs to scenes involving the team.
David Corenswet Will Play Superman In Superman: Legacy
Metallo Key Facts
Enemy
Superman
Superpowers
Superhuman strength and speed, powered by a Kryptonite heart
DCU Set-Up?
No
Anyone planning to take on the Justice League has to have an answer ready for Superman. In the comics, the Injustice League has sometimes had Metallo as a member to help with that exact problem. Metallo’s Kryptonite heart can help fend off the Man of Steel, and his cyborg exoskeleton makes him a fair match for the other heroes as well.
3 The League Would Help Sinestro Fight The Green Lanterns
A Lanterns Max Show Has Been Announced For The DCU
Sinestro Key Facts
Enemy
Green Lantern
Superpowers
Immeasurable power thanks to his yellow Power Ring
DCU Set-Up?
No
Sinestro is a villain who has split his time between schemes on Earth and more cosmic endeavors. Though he would likely consider the Injustice League beneath him and a step-down from his Yellow Lantern Corps, he would be happy to partner with them to destroy Earth’s Green Lanterns. It is likely at least one Lantern will be teaming up with the Justice League, giving DC the perfect reason to include Sinestro on the Injustice League.
2 Vandal Savage Might Have Future Beef With Booster Gold
A Booster Gold Max Show Has Been Announced For The DCU
Vandal Savage Key Facts
Enemy
The Justice Society & The Justice League
Superpowers
Immortality; enhanced speed, strength and agility
DCU Set-Up?
No
Vandal Savage’s immortality and powerful healing ability make it very likely that he will be around longer than most heroes. This means he could easily be an active villain in the future and a known threat to upcoming DCU hero Booster Gold. It would create a very interesting dynamic if Booster already had a history with Vandal, since the villain wouldn’t necessarily know about it yet due to the time travelling nature of the DC hero. This type of rivalry would be unique among the hero-villain pairings between the two Leagues, which would keep things fresh.
1 Deathstroke’s Inclusion Could Pay Off An Old DC Tease
Joe Manganiello Played Deathstroke In Justice League
Deathstroke Key Facts
Enemy
Mutliple, including the Teen Titans
Superpowers
Healing factor; superhuman strength, speed, and senses
DCU Set-Up?
No
If James Gunn decides to set up the Injustice League in the DCU, it wouldn’t be the first time DC attempted a live-action version of the team. They already teased one in Justice League, though it only had two members: Lex Luthor and Deathstroke. The DCU doesn’t seem to be afraid to take elements of the DCEU that were positively received. Since there had been some hype surrounding Deathstroke joining the Injustice League before, DC might decide to make it happen now with a new version of the character, capitalizing on his extensive comic history and considerable fighting prowess.
