Welcome back to another Fantastic Five, where we shout out the very best comics of the week! This week was a DC clean sweep, as New Gods once again claims the top spot joined by Superman, Catwoman, Nightwing, and Flash. Let’s get to the books!
#5: Absolute Flash #2
Absolute Flash #2 is a great follow-up to the series’ debut issue. It’s filled with action, intensity, and enough emotion to captivate readers through a well-paced story. With an intriguing cliff-hanger to end things, this issue is another excellent story by Lemire that shows how his ability to deliver intriguing origins for familiar heroes (such as his work on Green Arrow) can involve twists and turns that will surprise even readers who consider themselves experts on the characters. As a result, Absolute Flash #2 is an incredible read that is just as intriguing as the last issue.

#4: Summer of Superman Special #1
Summer of Superman Special #1 accomplishes its Superman-sized storytelling goals, delivering a story that the Man of Steel’s fans will love – and might win over some new ones in the process. Bottom line: there’s never been a better time to be a Superman fan.

#3: Catwoman #75
On the whole, Catwoman #75 is mostly a self-contained story that begins to answer many of the questions that were first planted in Catwoman #69. Though the reader is nowhere close to finding out who wants Selina dead, Grønbekk is starting to put all the pieces together in a fun storyline that will be sure to please both classic Catwoman fans and heist movie fans.

#2: Nightwing #125
In Nightwing‘s second arc, “By the Book”, Dan Watters and Francesco Francavilla open with nothing short of a perfect introduction to this new story. While some may not like how little Nightwing appears in the story, it works very well to bring attention to those moments he appears in the narrative while elevating how realistic the story itself is despite its ominous nature. Additionally, the story feels very moody and much like a noir, which is only elevated by incredible art. As a result, Nightwing #125 is an excellent story from start to finish.

#1: New Gods #5
V and Cagle continue to be the team which produces work that sticks in my mind each month after reading it. The pages of New Gods don’t just compel thought, but they compel follow-up. It’s so easy to find yourself looking up concepts, or trying to find old New Gods stories that the two might be pulling from. This book is one which has been enjoyable, but more importantly it’s rewarding to engage with and reread. The next issue simply can’t come fast enough.
