Summary
Gustin is a huge fan of Superman, sparking interest in a Superman & Flash team-up.
Despite low chances of the Flash returning, Gustin could still appear in the DCU in some capacity.
Grant Gustin starred as Barry Allen in the DC series The Flash, and there is still some hope that the actor may play a role in the upcoming DCU. Everything known about Superman suggests that the film will interact strongly with the franchise’s legacy, and there have been few more significant additions to The Flash’s legacy in the past decade than the CW series Gustin starred in. The series ran for 9 seasons, contributed heavily to the Arrowverse, and explored Flash’s comic book history. The series even crossed over with the DCEU, featuring an appearance by Ezra Miller as another Barry Allen.
While the DCEU and Arrowverse have both ended, nothing in superhero media is ever truly over. The canon only grows larger and larger, allowing for things like multiple versions of “Crisis on Infinite Earths” to be told on-screen. The live-action iteration used actors from throughout the years, and even 2023’s The Flash saw a prominent return to the Batman role by Michael Keaton. Following the examples set in these other films and series, despite his show being finished, there is always the possibility that Grant Gustin could return to the role of The Flash in some capacity.
DCU Chapter One Gods And Monsters: Every Movie & Show In The New DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe begins with six movies and six shows that open the DCU’s first chapter, “Gods and Monsters”.
I Need To See Grant Gustin’s The Flash Team Up With Superman
Gustin Is A Huge Fan Of The Superman Character
Grant Gustin’s Flash teaming up with David Corenswet’s Superman in the DCU would be an incredible event. Gustin responded to DCU casting rumors following online conversations with James Gunn, saying he got in touch with Gunn because he was such an enormous fan of the Superman character. Speaking with Men’s Health, Gustin said he “fell in love with Superman because of Christopher Reeve. I loved those movies as a kid, and have remained a Superman fan my whole life.” This excitement led to conversations around the new Superman film.
The enthusiasm that the Barry Allen actor has for the character is infectious, and being able to see that realized in some capacity in the DCU would be amazing. While there have been live-action appearances of The Flash and Superman together, including some fun scenes in 2017’s Justice League, the passion that Grant Gustin has for the Flash and Superman would no doubt enhance the DC Universe. With no new Flash yet set for the DCU, seeing Gustin’s Flash appear in the universe would be an excellent way to unify the franchises.
How The Arrowverse Sort Of Did A Superman & The Flash Team-Up
Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl Crossed Over With The Flash Several Times
The Arrowverse had a number of episodes where Grant Gustin’s Flash shared the screen with Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl. This began in “Worlds Finest,” where Barry Allen travels to Supergirl’s universe, and the two work together to stop Silver Banshee and Livewire. Notably, both Gustin and Benoist appeared together on Glee, and the two had significant chemistry together. The episode saw the two universes colliding, and Benoist and Gustin would share the screen several more times in the following seasons. Notably, other versions of The Flash and Supergirl were also paired up in the 2023 film.
Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman and Grant Gustin’s Flash did share the screen together during the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” event. Gustin was also able to appear alongside Brandon Routh’s Superman, letting the Man of Steel fan act alongside two iterations of the hero. However, the actual screen time shared between the characters in such a jam-packed event was minimal. As a result, there are still Superman crossover stories to be told with this Flash, and thus much opportunity for us to potentially see Grant Gustin in the role once more.
Will Grant Gustin The Flash Join James Gunn’s DCU?
Gustin May Be More Likely To Appear As Another Character
Despite being an exciting prospect, it is unlikely that Grant Gustin will join the DC Universe as The Flash anytime soon. The DCU is in a state of infancy, and the brand is working hard to differentiate itself from the projects that came before. While a few figures are returning from the DCEU – which the Arrowverse did cross over with – by and large, the new universe is setting out to create something fresh, and to clearly set itself apart for general audiences. Including Grant Gustin’s Flash would likely confuse that.
However, James Gunn responded to comments about Grant Gustin on Threads where he gave support to the actor, saying that he would love to work with him in the future. This is far from any kind of confirmation, but Gunn is clearly a fan of DC’s legacy, and it would not be surprising if he cast Gustin in another role in the future. This could be as a different hero or only a small cameo. If there is a project where the actor would fit in, it is likely that he would be used in the DCU in some capacity.
Superman 2025 Cameo Will Be The Ultimate Christopher Reeve Tribute, 2 Years After Divisive CG Appearance In The Flash
New Superman movie casting confirms a cameo that will honor former live-action Superman actor Christopher Reeve in James Gunn’s upcoming DCU film.
Grant Gustin has been an important part of the DC Universe in the past decade, and the actor’s legacy and contributions will not soon be forgotten. While Gustin has moved on from the role for the time being, there are always future opportunities for reprisals of these iconic roles. Even this year’s Deadpool & Wolverine brought back heroes from throughout the decades of Marvel’s legacy. While a shared appearance by David Corenswet’s Superman and Grant Gustin’s Flash in the DC Universe is not likely to happen soon, we can certainly hold out hope that it may occur someday down the line.
DC Universe
The DC Universe is one of the biggest comic book franchises and often competes with Marvel. DC Comics started as National Allied Publications, founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1935. Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
