Warning! Spoilers ahead for Absolute Green Lantern #1!DC Comics has finally introduced its Absolute Universe take on Hal Jordan, but he’s far from being the heroic Green Lantern fans know. Fans have already seen numerous variations of classic heroes that have stripped DC’s finest down to their bare essentials. But the Emerald Knight is going through a darker transformation altogether.
In a preview for Absolute Green Lantern #1 by Al Ewing and Jahnoy Lindsay, Hal is walking down a highway as a voice tells him that he must be without fear. He’s clearly not well and a police officer stops by to check on Hal. Unfortunately, the officer notices that Hal is suspiciously keeping his left hand in his pocket.
Things escalate quickly as the cop orders Hal to show his hand. Hal Jordan relents when the officer draws his gun, but in the blink of an eye, the officer vanishes with nothing left of him but his badge.
Absolute Green Lantern’s Hal Debuts by Murdering a Police Officer
What is Going on with Hal Jordan in This Universe?
Darkseid’s energy has completely transformed a variant of the DC Universe into something nearly unrecognizable. After his energy settled on Earth-Alpha, it began to shape the universe into one that reflected his ideals such as adversity and strife. Here, hope was the underdog, and though heroes emerged just as they did in the Prime DC Universe, things are far more difficult, and they lack many of the comforts of their counterparts. Batman lacks his family’s immense wealth, the Flash is without his legacy, and Wonder Woman was raised without her Amazonian sisters, having been raised in hell instead.
It’s an interesting choice to debut Hal by having him kill a cop. After all, in the Prime DCU, the Green Lanterns are essentially cops that protect the entire universe. Granted, Hal was trying to do everything in his power not to kill the officer, but something has taken control of Hal in the Absolute Universe. He mentions Abin Sur, hinting that his meeting with the alien has taken a different turn than usual. Not to mention covers for future issues of Absolute Green Lantern show Hal’s hand radiating black energy, hinting that he’s just getting started on this path.
Is Hal Jordan Going Full Villain in Absolute Green Lantern?
Or Will He Have the Willpower to Overcome What’s Happened to Him?
Whatever Hal has gone through has changed him for the worse. He’s a danger to others and possibly himself. That being said, even in a world as broken as this, the Absolute heroes still retain much of who they are inside. Hal might be corrupted in some way, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have the same levels of willpower as his Prime Universe variant. Despite his body being used for evil, Hal could still overcome whatever horrific entity has attached itself to him and prove that he’s still got thae heart of a Green Lantern inside him.
Absolute Green Lantern #1 is available on April 2nd from DC Comics.
