Warning: contains spoilers for Green Lantern War Journal #12!

Green Lantern has claimed his most powerful ring ever, just as DC promises a new status quo for the character. In a preview for Green Lantern War Journal #12, John Stewart and Guy Gardner make their final stand against an ancient and evil god. During the course of the battle, Stewart takes command of a power ring that easily rivals anything he had during his time with the Green Lantern Corps.

DC shared a preview of Green Lantern War Journal #12 with AIPT. The issue, the last of the series, is written by Philip Kennedy Johnson and drawn by Mantos. John Stewart, Guy Gardner and the Shepherd are locked in battle with Olgrun. John is in possession of the Dark Star Ring, seeking to use it to fight Olgrun and then return it to its rightful place.

However, Byla, one of Stewart’s allies, tells him that the Dark Star Ring is his now, but to beware its power, as it was not like any ring he had used before.

Green Lantern John Stewart Has Been Growing in Power

The Dark Star Ring Is a Powerful But Deadly Artifact

The preview ends with Byla’s death, and John as the sole wielder of the Dark Star Ring, continuing a huge change in Green Lantern’s status quo. After the United Planets took control of the Corps, long-serving Lanterns such as Stewart and Hal Jordan were dismissed, and replaced with bootlickers. While Hal fights the UP in Green Lantern, John Stewart has been facing down the Radiant Dead in the pages of Green Lantern War Journal. The Dark Star Ring, mentioned in the preview, harnesses the power of a dark dimension. Stewart is still learning the true scope of his abilities.

Although John Stewart is still feeling his way around with the Dark Star Ring, he may soon have to unleash its full destructive power. Stewart seems reluctant to use it, perhaps being aware of its true nature, and Byla’s warning seems to confirm his suspicions. If Stewart is indeed able to use the Dark Star Ring, it will add to his already considerable power. Although Stewart is no longer a Green Lantern, he has still managed to power himself up, joining the Godstorm. With the Dark Star Ring, John Stewart may become unstoppable.

Big Changes Are Coming for the Green Lantern Corps

Will John Stewart Keep the Dark Star Ring?

At San Diego Comic-Con, DC promised big changes to the Green Lantern franchise, and Stewart’s new ring may play a role. Hal Jordan will soon make his stand against the United Planets. The UP currently has the Green Lantern Corps in their pockets, and have given them upgrades that make them more powerful. John Stewart is a Green Lantern to his core, and will most likely help Hal. If he does, then the United Planets may not stand a chance before Green Lantern’s most powerful ring ever, the Dark Star Ring.
