Writer Tom King has huge faith in the upcoming Green Lantern show and is setting the bar high for the anticipated adaptation. King has left his mark on the comics world with dozens of critically-lauded stories. Now he’s helping usher in a new Green Lantern series that he thinks could be something really special.
Tom King spoke with Comic Book Movie to discuss his new miniseries Black Canary: Best of the Best. However, he also provided some information about the upcoming HBO series Lanterns, which King co-created and serves as an executive producer of. King spoke highly of what he’s seen so far, praising Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre’s chemistry as Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
When you look at Kyle, you see someone who used to fly jetplanes and embodies Hal. When you look at Aaron, his heart, his soul, and his strength are so John Stewart. He’s so perfect. It’s going to be great.
King also mentioned that, despite some doubts from fans about Chandler’s age, he believes the actor ‘embodies’ everything great about the more seasoned Green Lantern. King also believes Pierre perfectly captures John Stewart’s best strengths.

The Writer of One of the Best Green Lantern Stories Would Know
For around a decade, Tom King has written or co-written some of the most critically acclaimed comics in recent DC history. From Grayson, to Mister Miracle, to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and Human Target, King has made a name for himself with stories that dive deeply into various characters’ emotions and histories. Throughout his career he’s written dozens of popular characters, including Hal Jordan in the one-off special, Justice League: The Darkseid War: Green Lantern #1, which eloquently showcased Green Lantern grappling with newfound godhood.
King is one of the few people working on Lanterns who has actually written a Green Lantern story. He might not have written the main series, but anyone who read King’s tie-in to “Darkseid War” knows that he has a solid understanding of who Hal is. As someone who’s been helping build this series from the ground up, King has a lot invested in this series. But he’s also able to see it from the point of view as a comic creator and, by his measure, Lanterns is doing exactly what it needs to be a proper Green Lantern adaptation.

Green Lantern Fans Can (And Should) Relax
Fans who have been following this series have expressed nervousness, either at Kyle Chandler’s age or the ‘grounded’ tone its been said the show is aiming for. But Tom King has full faith in what he’s seen so far. And the word of someone who’s produced as many quality comic books as he has should mean something to fans. Could the series not live up to expectations? It’s certainly possible. But if Tom King isn’t worried and is even excited as the new Green Lantern show comes together, then fans should rest easy.
