Warning! Spoilers ahead for Aquaman #1!One of the DC Universe’s greatest heroes has accidentally stumbled upon an Infinity Gauntlet-level weapon. In the blink of an eye, Aquaman has just lost his family and his home thanks to a mysterious object. But the weapon’s secret history reveals it could be connected to forces that could endanger the Earth.

In Aquaman #1 by Jeremy Adams and John Timms, Arthur Curry returns to Atlantis where he’s approached by Jackson Hyde, who brings a strange pearl to Aquaman’s attention. Arthur ignores Jackson, but the next time Aquaman is away from Atlantis, the kingdom is destroyed, and the pearl is the only thing that remains.

Aquaman has the Justice League analyze the pearl, who connect it to magical vibration in the ocean. Aquaman finds a decaying relic and tosses the pearl inside it, creating a gateway. But after Aquaman ventures inside the portal, the relic is revealed to be a glowing Omega symbol.

Aquaman Discovered a Pearl That Leveled Atlantis

The Pearl Has a Strange History in the DCU

If that pearl looks familiar, it’s because it’s shown up in several stories previously written by Jeremy Adams. It first appeared in a diverging timeline in Flashpoint Beyond as a weapon Emperor Aquaman used to sink entire nations into the ocean. The pearl later appeared in The Flash #785 on an alternate world that was decimated by the Fraction and used by a Flash variant to restore life on Earth. But the pearl finally appeared in the Prime DC Universe in Batman: Brave and the Bold #18, where a White Martian attempted to use it to restore life on Mars.

Throughout its appearances, the pearl has been heralded as one of the most powerful objects around and is connected to life itself. But that doesn’t explain why it appears to have destroyed Aquaman’s kingdom, nor why it’s seemingly connected to Darkseid (if that’s what the Omega symbol implies, anyway). Regardless, much like the Infinity Gauntlet, this pearl has god-level power, and even in different timelines or alternate Earths, it’s an extremely coveted item that both good and bad entities have tried to possess. It’ll be interesting what the pearl will mean for Aquaman as he literally dives into the unknown.

Is Aquaman Facing More Power Than He Can Handle?

Or Will His Connection to the Ocean Make Him The Pearl’s Perfect Wielder?

Though its purpose and power has yet to be revealed, the pearl is an artifact that’s innately connected with water. And no one knows the mysteries of the ocean better than Arthur Curry, even if he’s a bit out of his depth so far. Though Arthur has lost his home and his family is missing, he bravely ventured out to get answers about the pearl. If anyone can get to the bottom of this, it’s him. He might even wind up learning how to master the pearl and become one of the most powerful characters in the entire DC Universe.
