Henry Cavill made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a brief, but meaningful cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor has flirted with the superhero world before in the DC Extended Universe as Superman, but a return to the DC is no longer possible and Cavill might have an interesting MCU future ahead.
Henry Cavill gave the best look at his Wolverine in a new post on his Instagram. Deadpool & Wolverine was filled with meaningful cameos, and while some of them were rumored and expected, others came as a huge surprise, Cavill’s Wolverine, included. The actor had a brief, but remarkable stint early in the film, as Deadpool was looking for a version of Wolverine in the Multiverse to help him save his timeline.
Deadpool & Wolverine Actor Reveals How Ryan Reynolds Convinced Him to Play [Spoiler] Again
One Deadpool & Wolverine star talks about the pitch behind his pre-MCU superhero character’s return and why he loved filming a key R-rated scene.
Cavill played an angry version of Wolverine called “The Cavillrine,” and Deadpool even had enough time to make a joke about Marvel being able to treat him better than the studio down the street. Cavill was initially supposed to return as Superman, but with James Gunn restarting the DC Universe with a new version of the film, that is no longer possible. Addressing his short cameo, Cavill also noted the sacrifices he made for the role: his mustache.
“To be safe, I shaved the mustache off for this one. Just the mustache,” Cavill wrote. This is also a dig at the DC Extended Universe, as the actor was famous unable to shave off his mustache for 2017’s Justice League reshoots, as he was filming for 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout. The original cut of the film showed Cavill with a CGI upper lip which was blasted online.
Nicolas Cage Almost Returned as Ghost Rider in Deadpool & Wolverine
Ryan Reynolds confirms that a Nicolas Cage cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine almost happened.
In a new interview with Variety, Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy explained how he managed to get Henry Cavill to appear in the film. The director explained that Cavill had two reasons to appear in the film. He also noted that there was only one way to refer to the actor — the Cavillrine.
“If we’re going to talk about him, we must call him by his actual credited name, the Cavillerine, which Ryan coined,” Levy started. “I knew it was undeniable as soon as Ryan came up with that term. He said ‘yes’ right away because he knew it would be subversive and playful. It was also with a lot of affection for him and his body of work, and playing with his legacy as a DC hero now that he’s appearing as a variant of a Marvel hero.”
Fans have been rallying to get Cavill to the MCU since his departure from DC, and had several options he could play. Some of them wanted Cavill to play Hyperion, others noted he would make a great Captain Britain. So far, there’s no confirmation whether Cavill will stay in the MCU as any of them but it might open the door for future roles.
Deadpool & Wolverine is playing in theaters.
