How DC Studios’ James Gunn describes Lex Luthor to his Superman movie villain Nicholas Hoult

Are you ready to meet the new Lex Luthor?

Nicholas Hoult will make his debut as Lex Luthor in DC Studios’ Superman, coming to theaters July 11. In December we got our first look at Hoult’s Luthor when James Gunn dropped the Superman teaser trailer, but there’s still a lot we don’t know. While Nicholas Hoult wasn’t giving away any spoilers, the Golden Globe award winning actor did drop some hints during a spotlight panel at Megacon 2025.

Hoult began by talking about the root of Luthor’s hatred and distrust for Superman.

“I think there’s an element of if someone has ultimate power and the ability to do anything, and be unstoppable, what happens when what they do doesn’t align with everyone’s belief of what is right.”

Hoult then praised Superman director and writer James Gunn.

“James is such a wonderful writer, and I think the way he’s approached this story and world is very smart and fun, and it’s complete. The way he approaches every single one of these characters is unique and fun.”

Hoult also revealed how Gunn described Luthor’s intelligence, giving us more insight into the villain.

“He described Lex as almost like a magician level of intelligence in the science level that he’s working on.”

While Hoult gave us nuggets, he was careful not to reveal too much.

“I have to be cautious with what I’m saying. There’s so much that I want to say, but I won’t give too much away. Maybe after July 11 we can all meet up here and we can break it all apart.”
