Wonder Woman’s iconic Invisible Jet was finally brought to the realm of live-action in Wonder Woman 1984, and the DC Extended Universe used real-life aircraft to depict the famous jet. Set between 2017’s Wonder Woman and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in the DCEU timeline, Wonder Woman 1984 reveals how Diana Prince continued to protect humanity following World War 1 before her return to the public eye and co-founding the Justice League. The film adapts many famous elements of Wonder Woman’s comic lore, including the Invisible Jet, which receives a new origin that honors its comic incarnations.

In their pursuit of Maxwell Lord, who had gained the powers of the Dreamstone, Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) and Steve Trevor commandeer a jet from an aerospace museum for their flight to Cairo. As the plane takes off, the US Military attempts to apprehend them, but Wonder Woman covers their escape by using an invisibility spell – similar to the one Zeus used to hide Themyscira from the rest of the world – on the jet, causing it to become invisible to both the naked eye and radar. The DCEU’s Invisible Jet, notably, is a hybrid of real-life aircraft from the era.

The Real Airplanes That Became Wonder Woman’s Invisible Jet

For the most part, the DCEU version of Wonder Woman’s Invisible Jet resembles a Panavia Tornado – a Cold War-era multirole strike aircraft used by West Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy. Notably, the real-life Panavia Tornado had a different cockpit interior from the Invisible Jet, with the navigator seated behind the pilot. In Wonder Woman 1984, Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor are next to each other, with the plane using the cockpit of an F-111 Aardvark, an American Cold War-era multirole aircraft that had side-by-side seating. This change was most likely made for the sake of character interaction.

Respected Critics Are Coming To Wonder Woman 1984’s Defense – And I’m Here For It

4 years after Wonder Woman 1984’s release and divisive reception, two prominent voices have made very good points about its criticism.

Fascinatingly, the invisibility enchantment on the jet protects it from radar detection and makes it invisible to the naked eye. Radar does not require an object to be visible, since it detects them through radio wave reflection, so the jet’s invisibility to radar shows how potent the enchantment is. In addition to making the jet invisible to one’s vision, it appears to also create blind spots for any other means of detection, be they technological or organic, with the Invisible Jet also flying silently once the magic takes effect.

Wonder Woman’s Invisible Jet In The Comics Explained

Wonder Woman’s Invisible Jet is one of the most famous elements of the Wonder Woman comic mythos, so its appearance in Wonder Woman 1984 was more than welcome. The Invisible Jet has been reimagined several times over the decades, with the vehicle appearing in every mainstream DC Comics continuity. In Wonder Woman’s 83-year history, the Invisible Jet has been a gift from Aphrodite (with parts acquired by Wonder Woman herself), a transformed form of Pegasus, a sapient robot, a shapeshifting extraterrestrial vehicle, a stealth jet created by Batman, or an experimental US Military aircraft modified by Amazonian magic.

While the Invisible Jet is often depicted as being transparent (with Wonder Woman herself visible while the vehicle is in flight), these details were only visual aids for the reader’s benefit. The Invisible Jet and its occupants were always intended to be completely invisible, in-universe.

Initially, the Invisible Jet was a necessity for Wonder Woman, as she lacked the ability to fly on her own, but the Invisible Jet would seemingly become obsolete in the post-Crisis era, which gave Wonder Woman comparable flight abilities to Superman. Even so, Wonder Woman would find the Invisible Jet to remain invaluable. In addition to allowing Wonder Woman to fly without detection, the Invisible Jet also allows her to transport passengers and cargo. Moreover, the Invisible Jet has magic-based armaments and can travel underwater and in deep space – supplying its occupants with the necessary oxygen and pressure.

How Wonder Woman 1984 Honors The Comic Legacy of Wonder Woman’s Invisible Jet

The DCEU’s iteration of Wonder Woman’s Invisible Jet combines elements of various comic eras. Like its modern iterations, the Invisible Jet was once a conventional airplane that was enhanced with magic. As with the earliest versions of the jet, the DCEU’s Invisible Jet was also a necessity for Wonder Woman, who had not yet discovered her power to fly (though she gains the ability by the end of the movie). Wonder Woman 1984 found a clever way to bring the famous Invisible Jet to life in live-action while honoring its history in the Wonder Woman comic mythos.
