The separate DC Universe where the stories ofThe Batman are being told has already been populated with some of the Dark Knight’s greatest villains, but there is one who was theorized then debunked that I really want to see appear. With the future of The Batman‘s universe being filled with potential spinoffs and sequels after the excellent The Penguin, there now appear to be many opportunities to expand this world. Whether in a follow-up to that show, in The Batman Part II, or somewhere else entirely, one villain would be a perfect fit for this world.

Ever since The Batman was released, there has been speculation about the iconic villains that will appear in The Batman Part II. Every foe from Batman’s history, from Hush to Poison Ivy to Mr. Freeze, has been rumored to be the main antagonist in the next film. Considering the grounded take on the character and his villains, it appears that there will have to be some changes made away from the fantastical to fit some of these characters in the universe. One, however, has just enough terror and just enough realism to fit perfectly as he is.

Scarecrow Would Be Genuinely Perfect For The World Of The Batman

Jonathan Crane Would Be Both Terrifying And Terrific

Scarecrow is an incredible villain in the Batman mythos, and would be an excellent foe to take on the Robert Pattinson iteration of the hero. Dr. Jonathan Crane works as a psychiatrist, and uses fear toxins and drugs to provoke hallucinations in his patients. After seeing the drug trade in Gotham with the use of Bliss during The Penguin, and after seeing Batman’s weaponizing fear against crime in Gotham, Scarecrow, and his links to Arkham and corruption in Gotham, would be a perfect foil to take on the Dark Knight during his next story.

The Matt Reeves version of Gotham, even if grounded, is distinctly different from Christopher Nolan’s, and a fresh, horrific take on the villain could easily stand out.

The only downside to this is that a grounded take on Scarecrow was already done in Batman Begins. Fortunately, the Matt Reeves version of Gotham, even if grounded, is distinctly different from Christopher Nolan’s, and a fresh, horrific take on the villain could easily stand out. He could be more horrific, and the visions from his hallucinations could be made into something truly unique and unsettling. It would fit within the world and could feel fresh, original, and compelling.

The Batman’s Easiest Way To Introduce Its Version Of Scarecrow Has Already Been Officially Debunked

Julian Rush Was Rumored To Be The Scarecrow

When he was introduced in The Penguin, many believed that Julian Rush was The Scarecrow. This mostly stemmed from a scene where Sofia came to his office, and some items were left out on his desk. These included what appeared to be Scarecrow’s burlap sack mask, and a pair of gloves with knives for fingers. This seemed to be a clear setup that Rush would eventually become Scarecrow in the universe, and many glommed on to the theory. However, this was eventually debunked.

Showrunner Lauren LeFranc weighed in on the Julian Rush Scarecrow theory, and dismissed it as false. On the Golden Globes Red Carpet, LeFranc made this very clear when asked about Rush, saying: “Well, I can say he’s not the Scarecrow.”This makes the items in Rush’s office seem strange, and has left many speculating about their importance. I wonder if perhaps Rush was theorized to possibly become the Scarecrow, but the plan was abandoned later in production.

I Still Think Scarecrow Could & Should Appear In The Batman’s Universe At Some Point

Julian Rush’s Scarecrow Or A New Jonathan Crane Would Be Great In This Universe

Scarecrow should still play a part in the universe of The Batman, and this could work in many different ways. Showrunners and directors have intentionally misdirected the press in the past, and it is possible that Julian Rush could still become Scarecrow at some point in the future. However, whether done with Rush, or by introducing a new Jonathan Crane to the universe, The Scarecrow would be a perfect villain to appear in this universe in a grounded and terrifying take.

The role of Scarecrow could be played by many different performers, and he would fit perfectly into the world that Matt Reeves has created. While there is a great deal of realism in the new series, there are also heightened moments and features. Using that world and its characters to tell stories about corruption and terror in Gotham would fit in well with the existing installments in the franchise. Even as a small featured character in a future Batman sequel, Scarecrow would be memorable.

2024’s update to the world of The Batman may have also brought with it perhaps the easiest way for his defeat to come about in the universe.

I love the entire Batman gallery of rogues, and I’d like to see every one of them appear in live-action at some point in the future. What is most significant about Scarecrow, however, is that he would be a perfect fit for the the universe of The Batman. Using him to inject a little more horror and a little more terror into future installments of The Batmanand its overall story would be incredibly effective, and I hope to see that come to fruition at some point soon.
