Just like any major superhero movie, the production of James Gunn‘s Superman has caused the internet to stir with rumors. While many speculative questions from the fan base will go unanswered until the film’s release in 2025, the director has taken the time to put one of the most bizarre rumors to rest. It’s not uncommon for directors to play music on set in order to establish the tone of a scene, or simply for some fun between takes.
James Gunn’s movies are renowned for their impressive soundtracks and epic needle-drop moments, leading many to assume that the director enjoys a musical set. However, some fans have bizarrely presumed that the set of Superman has been adorned by the sound of a hit from the late ’90s.
The acclaimed superhero director took to Threads to debunk a rumor about an upcoming video game based on Matt Reeves’ The Batman. In the message thread, Gunn also took the time to settle the most bizarre rumor surrounding Superman‘s production; some fans had reported that “Tubthumping,” the 1997 anthem by one-hit-wonders Chumbawamba, could be heard playing on the movie’s set.
As a result, some fans believe the song will feature in Superman‘s soundtrack. The director outrightly denied the rumor, while exclaiming his shock that fans even thought it could be true. His post read:
“There is also no truth to Tubthumping by Chumbawamba being played on the set of Superman (this is a real rumor on Reddit someone just sent me!)”
As well as turning a little-known comic book team into one of Marvel Studios’ most successful franchises with the Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn also introduced young audiences to a collection of hit songs from numerous decades gone by.
Each Guardians movie focused on a new era of music, starting from the ’60s and ’70s in the first film, through to the ’90s and early ’00s in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn’s DC Extended Universe outing, The Suicide Squad, also featured similar needle drops, including hits by The Pixies, Johnny Cash, The Fratellis, and Louis Prima. As a result, some fans assume that the director will bring his penchant for blending his movies with incredible soundtracks to the upcoming Superman reboot.
James Gunn Shares First Look at DCU’s Jimmy Olsen
James Gunn has shared the first official look at Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen in the DCU’s Superman movie, which is set for release in July 2025.
So far, Gunn hasn’t publicly addressed the possibility of popular songs being used in this film. There are still many months until Superman releases in theaters next July, but fans have already begun creating their own fantasy soundtracks for the film. While Superman might not feature a soundtrack filled with beloved hits (or Chumbawamba), the director has previously addressed the movie’s score.
In a previous post on Threads (via r/DC_Cinematic on Reddit), Gunn said that he is already hard at work on Superman‘s score, and the new music will take the movie in a new direction compared to previous Superman films. The director explained:
“I have more than an idea, we are, as usual, already developing score, and taking a unique path.”
