The highly anticipated Superman movie from DC Studios is slowly edging toward its 2025 release date. James Gunn, who has been overrun with questions about the project on social media, recently shared a few new details about the film and the larger DC Universe.
“Everything’s going to be totally different,” Gunn said during an appearance on MovieZine. “One of the things I love about DC Comics is that they’ve always been able to tell different stories in different ways,” he said. “We have something that’s relatively serious like Superman and then something that’s relatively comedic like Peacemaker all in the same universe. [Or] something very adult, like Peacemaker [and] something pretty family-friendly like Superman.”
Ben Stiller Shares His Thoughts On Potential Reality Bites Sequel
According to Stiller, a sequel would have to be a “whole different thing.”
Gunn also touched on the types of stories that can be found in DC Comics and how his movies will also include various options. “They’ve told stories that were more family-orientated, stories that were more adult-orientated, dark stories, light stories,” he said, referring to the comic book giant. “I think for us, we just want to tell a bunch of different stories.”
“A lot of those different stories are going to be in the DCU,” Gunn continued, before revealing that he wants to avoid repetition. “I think that to be able to tell different kinds of stories is kind of what makes things fun. One of the things I’ve gotten a little sick of is all these stories being relatively the same. I’m trying to step outside of that. We at DC are trying to step outside of that.”
Superman is the first film in the rebooted DC Universe. Written and directed by Gunn, the movie stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. “The story follows the titular superhero as he reconciles his heritage with his human upbringing,” the official synopsis reads. “He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way in a world that views this as old-fashioned.”
Milhouse Voice Actor Pamela Hayden Offers Advice To Her Simpsons Successor
Hayden hopes that her Milhouse replacement makes the role their own.
The cast also includes Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Carrigan, María Gabriela de Faria, Sara Sampaio, Skyler Gisondo, Nicholas Hoult, Terence Rosemore, Wendell Pierce, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell, Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover, and Christopher McDonald. Frank Grillo, who reprises his role as Rick Flag Sr. from the animated DCU series Creature Commandos, recently got to see a sneak peek of the Superman trailer.
Without giving too much away, Grillo said praised the new Superman movie and its lead star. “I got a sneak peek at a little bit of the trailer, and I’m not joking, and I’m not blowing this out of proportion, my skin was hot, and I had goosebumps,” he said. “That’s how great it is. By the way, this kid, David [Corenswet], is going to be a superstar. He’s amazing, as is the rest of the cast in the film, and just James’ take on it.”
Superman hits theaters worldwide on July 11, 2025.
