James Gunn has shared some new information about the tone of Creature Commandos as well as how it will fit in with the new DC Universe.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly for its Fall TV Preview issue, Gunn said of the Creature Commandos, “The thing I’ve always loved about DC Comics was that you had your mainstream comics that always ran, but they also had these tonally different comics like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns, and All-Star Superman. It was different from Marvel in that way. That’s something that I really want to retain within the studio, that every project is going to bring a different vision by the artists who are creating it.”

“I’m used to dealing with oddballs and irregular types and weirdos,” Gunn went on to add. “That’s what Guardians [of the Galaxy] is, and Creature Commandos is kind of like Guardians without the sentimentality. The Guardians are all really good characters at their heart, and that just isn’t necessarily the case with the creatures.”

As to how this series will fit in with the overall DC Universe, Gunn explains “Superman is the true start of everything, it’s a humongous epic. This is a way for people to just take a little nibble and see what it tastes like. There are a ton of fun references to other DC stuff, a bunch of hints for things that are coming. So I think it’s just an extraordinarily fun way to start.”

The full cast of the series includes Indira Varma (Obi-Wan Kenobi) as the main protagonist of the series, Bride of Frankenstein. She will be joined by Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., David Harbour (Stranger Things, Black Widow) as Eric Frankenstein, Zoe Chao (Your Place or Mine) as Nina Mazursky, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot & Weasel, Alan Tudyk (Doom Patrol) as Doctor Phosphorous, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Anya Chalotra as Circe.

As James Gunn has said previously in his role as co-chair of DC Studios, actors cast in this series will play their roles “across all media.” This means that should they appear in live-action productions or video games, you can expect to hear the same voices. This plan has been confirmed with the news that Grillo will appear as Rick Flag Sr. in Peacemaker season 2.

Creature Commandos will debut on Max on Dec. 5.
