DC Studios co-head James Gunn recently professed that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow wasn’t going to be the second DCU movie. This comes after Gunn verified one big rumor for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
Gunn brought this subject up in an interview with Omelete.com, conveying, “I didn’t necessarily know that Supergirl would be the second movie we were going to make,but Ana [Nogueira] wrote an incredible script, and then we hired an incredible director, and we’re going to do this movie after Superman because he was the best option.“

DC Studios co-head James Gunn confirms the casting of the big bad in Milly Alcock’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
He went on to further note, “Other movies have been written, but they haven’t been as good as this one. So we’re going to keep going with that. Everything has to be good. Quality comes first in every project we do. And that’s more important than telling a grandiose mega-narrative.“

Putting the spotlight on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow itself, Gunn delved into Milly Alcock being cast as Supergirl in January, avowing at the time, “Strangely, Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to [co-president and co-CEO] Peter [Safran] for this role, well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics. I was watching House of the Dragon & thoughtshe might have the edge, grace & authenticity we needed for the DCU’s Supergirl. And now here we are. Life is wild sometimes.”

DCU’s Supergirl Movie Casts The Old Guard Star in Villain Role
Milly Alcock finally has a co-star, with one of the actors from Netflix’s The Old Guard franchise joining the Supergirl movie as its main villain.
Tying into this, Alcock made an official statement about her DCU casting, conveying, “So excited to be a part of the DC fam – thank you so much to [James Gunn] for trusting me with Kara / Supergirl.” Additionally, pieces of fan art for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow gave fans a hypothetical look at Milly Alcock’s Maid of Might in May. However, the last piece took a dark turn, with text in the upper left corner stating, “Battle Damage.”
Prior to that, a rumor from 2023 claimed that Gunn himself would cast Supergirl as opposed to a director for Woman of Tomorrow, with the post featuring this bit of news stating that Supergirl is “being described as humorous with punk rock edginess to her,” and “[overall] having a toughness to her due to her witnessing the death of Krypton as a child.”
Besides these bits of news, veteran Supergirl actor Melissa Benoist shared her two cents on Alcock’s casting, avouching that she thinks Tying into this, DC Extended Universe alum Sasha Calle endorsed Alcock’s Woman of Tomorrow casting.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
