James Gunn says a new opening for DC StudiosElseworlds projects is currently being developed.

Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU kicked off this past December with the animated Creature Commandos series. They will follow that up with Superman, which is directed by Gunn and will be released in theaters this July, before Peacemaker Season 2 then premieres later this year.

While there are a number of other DCU projects that are in various stages of development, there are also television shows and movies based on DC Comics that exist in different continuities. These are referred to as DC Elseworlds.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman, for example, and The Penguin spin-off series take place in a different universe than the DCU, as does the animated Harley Quinn show available to watch on Max.

On Threads, Gunn was asked why The Penguin and Harley Quinn don’t have any DC Studios logo or fanfare attached to them.

Gunn answered, “All DC television & film projects are now under DC Studios. Because Harley Quinn was developed long before us we didn’t think it was fair to put the DC Studio fanfare on there. On Penguin, which we had a small hand in developing, we have a different DC Studios anim at the end. We’re currently working on the DC Studios Elseworlds opening.”

While not many DC Elseworlds projects have been announced at this time, Reeves is continuing to develop his Batman Epic Crime Saga. A sequel to The Batman is in the works and is currently dated for 2027, while Reeves has also said there are discussions happening about making a second season of The Penguin.

Regarding the DCU, Superman will be released in United States theaters on July 11, 2025. Peacemaker Season 2 is expected to arrive in August 2025, while Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has been dated for June 26, 2026.
