One of the newest characters in the DC Universe characters, who many believed to be dead, gets a clarifying status update from James Gunn. As the DCU timeline finally kicked off in 2024, the new era for DC Studios is underway, with lots of heroes and villains set to be featured on the big and small screens. While a Batman reboot is in the works, the audience already got a little taste of his rogues’ gallery through the Creature Commandos TV show.

Following the airing of Creature Commandos season 1, it was unclear what had happened to Clayface following his encounter with the team that left many to think he was now dead. However, after Gunn got asked about this plot point on Bluesky, the DC Studios co-CEO stated the following about the iconic Batman villain:

The reports of Clayface’s death have been greatly exaggerated. He is quite mushy though.

Gunn stressed that the “reports of Clayface’s death have been greatly exaggerated” while also jokingly noting that the DC foe is “quite mushy though.” At the time of this story’s publication, it is still undetermined which Clayface was used from the comics in Creature Commandos season 1.

Gunn’s Clayface clarification after the villain’s appearances in Creature Commandos season 1 makes perfect sense, given the fact that a solo movie is currently in the works at DC Studios for the beloved Batman foe. Even though Gunn hasn’t revealed specifically if the version of the character in Creature Commandos will be who the Clayface movie centers on, it would be logical if he is the one who ends up headlining the film. Whether or not Alan Tudyk will be back to voice him while a different actor plays the human counterpart remains to be seen, as his involvement hasn’t been announced either.

Even though the Clayface movie will likely explore how the villain became the famous shapeshifting mud monster, it’s possible that the film could focus on various parts of his life across the DCU timeline. Similarly, the DCU movie could pick up where he is currently after the events of Creature Commandos season 1. Taking this approach could also justify casting a different Clayface actor in his pre-transformation phase while Tudyk voices Clayface himself.

With James Gunn essentially confirming that the DCU’s Clayface is still alive, it will be fascinating to see what becomes of him after his initial defeat in Creature Commandos season 1. As the DCU’s Clayface movie is set to start filming this year, it is only a matter of time before new details start to emerge. Hopefully, once a director has been hired for the DCU film, it will become clear whether the release is in the main timeline, and whether it connects to Clayface’s Creature Commandos story if so.

The DC Universe is one of the biggest comic book franchises and often competes with Marvel. DC Comics started as National Allied Publications, founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson in 1935. Since then, the franchise has exploded with thousands of comic books, movies, TV shows, and video games. 2013 marked the beginning of the most recent iteration of the superheroes, with Zack Snyder introducing Henry Cavill as Superman. After several movies with mixed reviews, DC underwent a soft reboot under the helm of James Gunn and Peter Safran.
