The following contains major spoilers for Jenny Sparks #5, on sale now from DC Comics.

The Spirit of the 20th Century just laid out exactly why one of DC’s most powerful heroes isn’t really all that great.

Jenny Sparks #5 picks up with the titular hero trying to figure out exactly how to bring the unhinged threat of Captain Atom to an end. As she catches up with one of the survivors of Captain Atom’s ongoing crusade of terror, Jenny walks the man through the story of just how such an astonishing figure fell so far from grace. From the very beginning, it seemed as if there were no heights that Captain Atom could not reach, yet as he ascended through the ranks of the greatest heroes the DC Universe has to offer, it became painfully apparent that nothing he would ever do would help him overcome how utterly lackluster he was at his core.

The mantle of Captain Atom is one of the most storied in the entire DC Comics mythos, with the original iteration of the character being a product of Charlton Comics. In his debut in Joe GIll and Steve Ditko’s story “Introducing Captain Atom” from the pages of 1960’s Space Adventures #33, Captain Atom was introduced as a child prodigy named Allen Adam, whose own experimental rocket accidentally sent him careening out into space. In a tragic turn, the rocket exploded, utterly obliterating Adam on a molecular level before he was reborn as the atomic hero fans first fell in love with.

It wasn’t until 1987’s Captain Atom #1 by Cary Bates and Pat Broderick that the Nathaniel Adam version of the character fans know best was introduced. Originally a member of the United States Air Force who was wrongly imprisoned for treason, Adam signed up for an experimental procedure in the hopes of avoiding a military execution. After being subjected to a nuclear blast from within an alien spacecraft, Adam was transformed into the impossibly powerful Captain Atom, albeit in a process that toom nearly two decades to rebuild his physical form.

The Titans’ Worst Enemy Is Reforming a Classic DC Supervillain Team

The Titans’ most dangerous enemy and some of DC’s most underrated villains are about to remake a classic comic book super team for the worse.

Jenny Sparks has brought back the titular Spirit of the Twentieth Century to take on the threat of Captain Atom, whose personal crisis has driven him to take over an unsuspecting bar and make hostages of its patrons. While Jenny, Superman, and Batman have led the charge to free Captain Atom’s captives, those efforts have been for naught. Not only have the trio been entirely incapable of making any sort of dent in Captain Atom, Jenny even lost her life to the former hero, even if only for a short time before being resurrected once more.
