Joker, by Joaquin Phoenix and director Todd Phillips, was a cinematic phenomenon. The success of the 2019 film was such that there was long speculation about the possibility of a sequel. Five years later, “Joker 2” is a reality that is about to hit theaters around the world.
The original Joker marked a significant shift for DC Comics movies. Following mixed results from the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), Warner Bros. made a bold decision. Instead of continuing under the DCEU umbrella, Joker became a standalone film produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Films.
While critical reception was divided, audiences loved the film, driving it to over $1 billion at the global box office. The temptation to green-light a sequel became irresistible, even though the first movie was initially intended to be a one-off.
After months of rumors and silence, Todd Phillips announced in 2022 that Warner Bros. had officially approved the sequel, with a release date set for the fall of 2024.
The announcement of Joker: Folie à Deux came with significant updates for the project. Phillips confirmed his return as director, with Phoenix reprising his role as Arthur Fleck, the troubled soul who becomes the Joker.
The highly anticipated sequel will have an international release on October 2, 2024, with a US release slated for October 4. Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute the film once again, offering a wide theatrical release that includes IMAX screenings.
While Warner Bros. hasn’t yet confirmed when the film will be available for streaming, the company’s usual practice is to release films on Max (formerly HBO Max) 45 days after their theatrical debut. Based on this timeline, Joker: Folie à Deux could be available for streaming by late November or early December.
The original Joker sparked heated debate, with critics and audiences alike concerned that its themes might inspire real-life violence. Though Joker: Folie à Deux hasn’t hit theaters yet, it’s already generating controversy-this time, due to its casting choices.
The decision to cast Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, Joker’s infamous partner-in-crime, has sparked backlash among traditional fans. Many object to Gaga’s casting and to the film reportedly being a musical. However, Phillips and Phoenix have pushed forward with their vision, and fans are eagerly waiting to see how the project turns out.
