Josh Brolin is speculated to be in talks to join the rebooted DC Universe as Hal Jordan in the upcoming Lanterns series, and this move from Marvel to DC has been detailed in stunning new art. Josh Brolin is one of the most celebrated and beloved actors of his generation, so would be a huge asset to James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU. While there has been no official confirmation of Hal Jordan’s casting in the DCU, Josh Brolin is one of several names who have been suggested for the powerful role.

While news of Josh Brolin’s possible casting as Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern has received a mixed reception, new fan art shared by spdrmnkyxxiii showcases just how brilliant this pairing could be. The art imagines Josh Brolin in Hal Jordan’s iconic costume from DC Comics, with his fist glowing from the energy of his Green Lantern Ring. However, the art also depicts the ghostly vision of Thanos’ armor from the MCU’s Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame over Brolin, harking back to the actor’s previous superhero franchise roles.

If speculation concerning Josh Brolin’s casting as Hal Jordan’s Green Lantern turns out to be true, this would mark the actor’s fifth live-action role based on a character from a comic book series. Hal Jordan debuted in DC Comics in 1959’s Showcase #22, so he would be the oldest comic book character played by Brolin, though close on his heels are DC Comics’ Jonah Hex and Marvel Comics’ Mad Titan, Thanos. Jonah Hex was Brolin’s first foray into the world of live-action comic book heroes, playing the western superhero in 2010’s eponymous Jonah Hex.

Josh Brolin’s Reported DCU Role Could Redeem Two Of DC’s Biggest Box Office Bombs Of All Time

Josh Brolin could be returning to the DC Universe and his latest role could redeem two of the biggest cinematic disasters in DC’s history.

Following his portrayal of Jonah Hex, Josh Brolin appeared as a younger version of Tommy Lee Jones’ Agent K in 2012’s Men in Black 3. The Men in Black franchise was adapted from the Marvel Comics series, which spanned six issues in 1990 and 1991. 2012 also marked the first appearance of Thanos in the MCU, though Brolin wouldn’t portray the iconic Marvel supervillain until 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Thanos is Brolin’s most notable comic book movie role, but the fact it was entirely CGI gave him the opportunity to play another Marvel hero simultaneously.

Josh Brolin teased Thanos’ return to the MCU back in February 2024, though there has been no word of when this might happen just yet.

In the same year that Thanos waged war on the cosmos and wiped out half the population of the universe, Deadpool 2 also featured Josh Brolin as the mutant time traveler Cable. The antihero Cable eventually became a member of Deadpool’s team, but was curiously missing from Deadpool & Wolverine. While Josh Brolin’s future with Marvel is uncertain, it would be fantastic to see him continue his comic book movie streak by being cast as Hal Jordan in Lanterns, acting as an older and wiser mentor to the young John Stewart in the new DCU series.
