Vincent D’Onofrio knows who he wants to be cast as in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU.
D’Onofrio is known for playing Wilson Fisk/Kingpin in Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again. He played the character in all three seasons of Netflix’s Daredevil series prior to that, while Kingpin also appeared in Hawkeye and Echo.
While D’Onofrio will be reprising his Wilson Fisk once again for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, the actor is also open to playing a part in the DCU.
When asked on X if there was another character outside of Wilson Fisk that he’d ever want to play, D’Onofrio said, “Swamp Thing.”
Created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, Swamp Thing is a DC Comics character who first appeared in 1971’s House of Secrets #92. Swamp Thing has been featured in a number of solo stories — including the iconic 1980s run written by Alan Moore — while he’s also a regular member of the Justice League Dark.
Ray Wise and Dick Durock played Swamp Thing in a self-titled movie that was released in 1982. That was followed by a 1989 sequel titled The Return of Swamp Thing, which saw Durock reprise the role while Wise only appeared in it via archive footage. There was also notably a Swamp Thing television show released in 2019 starring Andy Bean and Derek Mears.
A new Swamp Thing movie is now in the works and will be set within the DCU. A Complete Unknown’s James Mangold is writing and directing the film, while no casting has yet been announced. A release date for the film has not been set.
The DCU does, however, kick into full gear this coming July with Gunn’s Superman. The second DCU movie will then be Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which releases in June 2026.
