HBO’s upcoming Lanterns series has officially found its Sinestro, with Deadline reporting that Ulrich Thomsen has been tapped to play the villainous character.
It’s unknown exactly what role Sinestro will have in the upcoming series, but in the world of DC Comics, he is one of the main villains in Green Lantern’s history. Originally introduced in 1961, Sinestro is a former Green Lantern who was dishonorably discharged after abusing his power and ends up founding his own villainous group known as the Sinestro Corps.
Unlike the Green Lantern Corps., which derive their abilities from their own willpower, Sinestro and his Corps’ yellow rings derive power from fear, leading him to be one of the most ruthless villains in Green Lantern’s history. This is in spite of his charming nature in general.
Thomsen is best known for his role as Kai Proctor in the Cinemax original series Banshee, as well as the 1998 film The Celebration. The Danish actor also appeared in the 2020 series The New Pope, as well as the 2022 drama Trom.
The Lanterns cast will star Aaron Pierre as John Stewart alongside Kyle Chandler, who has been cast in the series as Hal Jordan in the upcoming series. A separate report from THR notes that HBO looks to begin filming from January to June next year, so more information should come soon.
Other confirmed cast members for the series include Kelly Macdonald, who will play a character known as Sheriff Kerry in the series. Poorna Jagannathan will also star in the upcoming series as Zoe.
Lanterns will be executive produced by Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country, Ozark), Damon Lindelof (The Leftovers, Watchmen), and Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow), with the latter two also co-writing the series. It received an official straight-to-series order at HBO last June 2024, more than a year since the 8-episode project was first announced back in January 2023.
“The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” the synopsis for the show reads.
