With just a few weeks left in 2025, fans are getting excited about all the titles the upcoming year has to offer. As Fandango’s list of ten “Most Anticipated Movies of 2025” was unveiled online, it kicked off another debate about the DC Universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As the DC Universe is getting rebooted in 2025, the ongoing competition with the MCU will continue, and it will be fiercer than ever, despite the people who downplay the superhero genre in the cinematic landscape. The new list revealed by Fandango based on 9,000 ticket buyers’ opinions features two MCU films, Captain America: Brave New World, which tops the list as 2025’s most anticipated film, and the new take on Marvel’s first family, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, in the fifth place. Meanwhile, James Gunn’s Superman sits in the 9th spot, which sparked a new debate.

Gunn is confident that fans will love the new Superman actor.

2025 has an exciting movie list offer and some other non-superhero titles including Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning, Jurassic World Rebirth, John Wick‘s spinoff Ballerina, Avatar: Fire and Ash, Wicked Part Two, The Accountant 2, and 28 Years Later in the last spot. However, the most heated conversation was about the superhero genre.

Several fans couldn’t believe that James Gunn’s Superman sits as low as ninth, while Captain America 4 tops the list. “Gotta move Superman up, what are we doing here?” asked a follower in the heated debate on Discussing Film’s X account. “Superman is too low,” another agreed on Fandango’s official post. Another asked, “Wait Superman in 9th? Why are people not hyped?

Captain America 4’s Anthony Mackie Expected to Reunite With Chris Evans in Avengers 5

Captain America: Brave New World star Anthony Mackie is one of the latest actors to be confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday.

Other people believed other titles on the list should be higher. “Captain America: Brave New World, cmon there is no way that ranks above some of these. I get it, Marvel, but they have fallen off lately,” reads one of the comments, sparking a different event as Marvel had the second-highest-grossing film of 2024 with Deadpool & Wolverine. ” There’s no way ppl are more stoked for Captain America than Avatar, or 28 Years Later,” wrote another on CBR’s X account. “Fantastic Four should not be on this list lol,” a different person thought.

Realistically, people predicted Avatar 3 would top the box office the way the previous two installments did, despite ranking sixth. “The fact avatar is 6th but is gonna end up grossing the most in the box office is jokes lol,” wrote a different fan. Fans also noted how the list is made up of sequels or based on existing IPs, similar to the current 2024 box office top 10.

2025 will be filled with exciting titles for all genres, but the fact that the fan-based list drew such a strong reaction from fans proves the DC/ MCU competition is far from over. However, for non-superhero fans, there are plenty of exciting options that will premiere over the summer of 2025. At the same time, it echoes the original list, as most of them are sequels.

A fan pointed out that next year there will be a series of exciting sequels. Final Destination 6 will return on May 16, 2025, followed by the highly-anticipated 28 Years Later on June 20, M3GAN 2.0 a week later on June 27, I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel on July 18, Insidious 6 on Aug. 29, and Conjuring 4: Last Rites ending the original film series on Sept. 5.
