Following the success of The Penguin on HBO, DC Studios is moving forward with another project based on a well-known villain from Batman’s Rogues Gallery. This time, a movie will be made that puts the spotlight on Clayface.

Per Variety, it’s being reported that DC Studios has greenlit a feature film that follows Clayface. Filmmaker Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep) is on board to write the screenplay, but it’s not yet clear who will be directing. No plot details have been divulged, and it remains to be seen if the movie’s Clayface will be a part of the DCU alongside James Gunn’s Superman, or if it will be a DC Elseworlds movie that’s set in its own standalone universe, similar to the Joker films. Potentially, the film could also be connected to Matt Reeves’ The Batman, serving as another spinoff after The Penguin, given how there have been rumors of Clayface appearing in The Batman Part II.

20 Years Ago, Batman’s Most Controversial Director Did the Best Adaptation of a Horror Classic

After notably tarnishing the superhero genre with Batman & Robin, Joel Schumacher directed one of the best takes on a Gothic musical classic.

While Flanagan has found success as a director, he is not expected to helm the movie centered on Clayface. The filmmaker already has a packed schedule, as he’s set to write and direct a new take on The Exorcist. Additionally, he’s working on multiple Stephen King adaptations with new shows based on both The Dark Tower and Carrie in development with Flanagan. DC Studios is reportedly on the search for a director for the Clayface-centric film, and it’s reported that an official announcement about the project is forthcoming soon.

Flanagan is also known for his work on horror films like Hush, Oculus, Ouija: Origin of Evil, and Gerald’s Game. He’s made a big splash on Netflix as the creator of several horror shows, including The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and The Fall of the House of Usher. It’s not a major surprise to see him next taking on a project about Clayface, as he has previously named that character as one he’d love to explore for DC Studios.

Creature Commandos Features a Familiar Voice Actor for DCU’s Clayface

The actor behind the DC Universe’s Clayface in Creature Commandos has been revealed and it’s someone who has voiced the Batman villain before.

“I went into Warner Bros. to have the meeting about DC,” Flanagan revealed last year on the Script Apart podcast, sharing how he’d already pitched a Clayface project once before. “It was a general meeting with [producer] Jon Berg talking about whether there was anything in the DC Universe that I could be a fit for… I really want[ed] to do Clayface.”

I really want to do Clayface.

He added, “I went in and said, ‘You know, if you want to do some horror-leaning DC stuff, boy do I have a great take on Clayface. I’d love to do that movie.’ […] And the meeting kind of went nowhere. [Berg] didn’t really grab onto any of that stuff.”

The Clayface character is typically depicted as a shapeshifter with a clay-like body, able to transform and take on the form of any other person. It’s worth noting that the animated series Creature Commandos is establishing the DCU’s version of Clayface, which will similarly be a clay-like shapeshifting verison. Other incarnations of Clayface have forgone the more supernatural aspects by imagining the character as a villain who commits crimes while wearing disguises without literally shapeshifting into other people.

A release date has not yet been set for the untitled Clayface movie.
