He was expected to appear in the series, but now we have the official word: Nathan Fillion will appear in the upcoming “Lanterns” series on HBO. The star of “The Rookie” will play Guy Gardner, a member of the Green Lantern Corp whose live-action role Fillion will debut this July in “Superman.” It isn’t clear yet exactly how large a role Gardner will play in “Lanterns.”

Long before he was cast as Guy Gardner in the DCU, Nathan Fillion already enjoyed a long history with the “Green Lantern” franchise. The same year (2011) Ryan Reynolds‘s ill-fated “Green Lantern” released, Fillion voiced the same character in the animated movie “Green Lantern: Emerald Knights.”
He went on to voice Hal Jordan/Green Lantern for “Justice League: Doom,” “Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox,” “Justice League: Throne of Atlantis,” “The Death of Superman,” and “Reign of the Supermen.”

“Lanterns” is based on DC’s “Green Lantern” comic books and follows two members of the intergalactic police force, the Green Lantern Corp, as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. The space cops are the young John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), and the more experienced Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) who is training Stewart to replace him.
In spite of the now three intergalactic space cops appearing in “Lanterns” – not to mention their mortal enemy Sinestro played by Ulrich Thomsen – the show is said to have a very grounded feel.
“Lanterns” director James Hawes talked about how the show balances a more grounded feel with intergalactic superheroes. “It doesn’t lack its sci-fi magic, but it’s done in a world where you accept that these things just are,” Hawes said. “They don’t need that extra sprinkle of sci-fi fairy dust. It works within a physical world that we’ve come to know.”
Details on the plot have been kept tightly under wraps. So far we don’t know the nature of the murder that Jordan and Stewart are investigating, what kind of role Gardner plays, or even what role the villainous Sinestro plays.
“Lanterns” will premiere on HBO in 2026. The cast stars Aaron Pierre, Kyle Chandler, Kelly Macdonald, Ulrich Thomsen, Poorna Jagannathan, Stewart Augustus, Nicole Ari Parker, J. Alphonse Nicholson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Garret Dillahunt, Jason Ritter, and Nathan Fillion.
