The following contains major spoilers for The Flash #17, on sale now from DC Comics.

Nightwing just explained why some of DC’s greatest heroes are so unreliable.

The Flash #17 opens to find Wally West and his allies’ investigation into the string of outbreaks of preternatural rage drawing them all the way out to the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. There the heroes find a strange, towering structure having risen from the depths, once which not even Mister Terrific has any explanation for. Worse still, it is only a matter of time before the likes of Doctor Occult and Inspector Pilgrim arrive on the scene to point out how “fascinating” it all is, just as veteran heroes such as Nightwing and Black Canary have come to expect from their W.E.S. (Wandering Esoteric Smartass) compatriots.

Introduced all the way back in 1935’s New Fun Comics #6 in “The Vampire Master, Part 1 (of 4)” by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Doctor Richard Occult is one of the oldest occult detectives in the DC mythos. In his early adventures, Doctor Occult was usually aided by his partner and romantic interest, Rose Psychic, who herself has gone from an unsung hero of the Trenchcoat Brigade to one of the most prominent members of the mystic police unit known as the Other Side. In the current iteration of the DC Universe, Doctor Occult made a name for himself throughout the course of World War II before inheriting the infamous House of Secrets.

Inspector Pilgrim first appeared in 2023’s The Flash #1 by Simon Spurrier and Mike Deodato Jr., just after the events of DC Comics’ One-Minute War. At the time of his debut, Inspector Pilgrim was an ominous interloper bearing warnings of the then impending future of the Speed Force. This, coupled with the Inspector’s hesitance to let the Flash know of his existence, made the character all that more worrying, though it soon became clear that he had no ill-will towards any of Earth’s heroes. In fact, Inspector Pilgrim was eventually revealed to be none other than a future version of Wally West’s own son, Wade.

Over the past few months, the Flash Family have been embroiled in an ongoing series of battles against the likes of the Weather Wizard and the literal embodiment of the Wrath of God known as Eclipso. Although Eclipso has faced off against all manner of DC heroes for decades, he has taken a specific interest in Travis Morgan, also known as Warlord, a former Air Force pilot who made a life for himself in the fantastical wilds of Skartaris. Unfortunately for the Flash Family, the fact that Warlord has been possessed by Eclipso is entirely new information, leaving the heroes in the prime position to be taken advantage of and left for dead by their immortal adversary.
