Nightwing’s New Creative Team Already Changing Character’s Status Quo

Nightwing’s new creative team is already changing Bludhaven’s status quo, and it might not be for the better.

While various villains such as Boss Bludgeon and Dr. Proboscis are quick to try and carve out pieces of Bludhaven for themselves in the pages of Nightwing #119, they are just as quickly interrupted by the titular hero’s sudden appearance on their turf. Unfortunately, not even Nightwing can save the villains from a bomb planted by one of their own, nor from what else the Cirque du Sin has in store for the city. As it turns out, the CEO of Spheric Solutions, an arms manufacturer now taking over the reins of policing Bludhaven, is also a key member of this recently revealed criminal organization and neither Nightwing nor the mayor of the city herself have any clue as to the truth of the matter.

Nightwing #119 marks the first issue of writer Dan Watters and artist Dexter Soy’s run on the title following the explosive conclusion of writer Tom Taylor’s most recent epic storyline. The previous issue closed out the titular hero’s ongoing battle with Shelton Lyle, better known as the superpowered serial killer Heartless. After freeing Heartless’ hostages with the help of the rest of the Batman Family, Nightwing was finally able to bring about an end to the villain’s years-long reign of terror on the citizens of Bludhaven.

Over the course of Nightwing’s fight against Heartless, Dick Grayson was tested in just about every manner imaginable. After being framed as the killer himself, Dick was forced into hiding, all so that the Batman Family could help him to clear his name. To that end, Bruce Wayne took up the mantle of Nightwing, albeit only for a short time, leaving Dick free to recover from his wounds before getting back into the action for himself.

Apart from kicking off a new story with a new creative team, Nightwing #119 marks the series’ first entry into DC Comics’ new All In initiative. This comes as the DC Universe and Multiverse have been shaken up in demonstrable ways by the events of both the conclusion of Absolute Power and the recently released All In Special, which gave readers their first glimpse at the newly rechristened Absolute Universe. While the reality of Prime Earth is now cut off from the rest of the Multiverse, the reality of the Absolute Universe is giving rise to a whole new breed of iconic comic book heroes such as Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman.
