The following contains major spoilers for “Beautiful Lies,” from the pages of DC’s Lex and the City #1, on sale now from DC Comics.

One of Batman’s oldest foes is proving all over again that they’ve never really had ice in their veins.

“Beautiful Lies” by Jonathan Rivera, Michael Avon Oeming, Nick Filardi, and Ariana Maher opens to find the dreaded Mister Freeze and his henchmen carrying out a brazen heist targeting one of Gotham City’s many museums. Unfortunately for one of Freeze’s goons in particular, her beloved partner David just so happens to be working his very first shift as an overnight security guard in that very same museum. When another, more trigger-happy henchman shoots icey spikes through David, Freeze takes it upon himself to not just take out the one responsible, but to freeze David and Gigi.

Victor Fries, better known as Mister Freeze, is one of the earliest members of Batman’s iconic rogues gallery. Introduced all the way back in Dave Wood and Sheldon Moldoff’s “The Ice Crimes of Mr. Zero” from the pages of 1959’s Batman #121, Victor Fries has always been an ice-themed villain who uses a variety of high-tech weapons and traps to freeze his foes and victims solid. A genius scientist working in the field of cryogenics, Freeze is most often seen wearing an exo-suit that prevents him from succumbing to his strange affliction which requires him to stay in sub-zero temperatures in order to survive.

Although Mister Freeze has frequently shown himself to be just as murderous as any other costumed criminal to call Gotham City their home, he is also one of the most tragic figures to ever grace the halls of Arkham Asylum. It was after his wife Nora was stricken by a rare terminal illness of her own that Fries began conducting the research that transformed him into the villain fans know today. Even more heartbreaking, Freeze’s villainous efforts have almost always been part of a larger bid to fund his continued research in secret, all in the hopes of finding a cure for his beloved wife.

Power Girl is headed for a confrontation with three new villains who have already proven to be more than she and her allies can handle.

DC’s Lex and the City #1 is just the latest in a long line of anthology comics from the publisher, this time with each entry revolving around one of DC Comics’ many iconic romantic pairings. While Mister Freeze is certainly among the most prominent figures in the title, he is far from the only one of Batman’s many enemies to have their own story featured within DC’s Lex and the City. Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy and even the Riddler all get their own time to shine within the pages of this latest romance anthology, numerous Titans and Justice League mainstays are given the very same opportunity, albeit in far different fashion from their villainous contemporaries.
