James Gunn’s DCU promises some exciting times for fans of DC Comics. The upcoming release of Superman has become one of 2025’s most hotly anticipated movies, with its first trailer suggesting a movie that captures the hope and optimism that the Man Of Steel is known for. One of the breakout stars from Superman’s initial trailer is Krypto The Superdog. Krypto is utterly adorable in his first scenes glimpsed in the teaser, helping a weak and vulnerable Superman outside the Fortress Of Solitude. Much of Superman’s marketing has been focused around Krypto, including James Gunn’s decision to promote the character at the Puppy Bowl.

James Gunn has displayed some considerable confidence in Krypto The Superdog’s debut this Summer. On February 25, James Gunn confirmed to ComicBook that Krypto will be the star of several short movies. Releasing Fall 2025, there will be four Krypto The Superdog shorts in total, which will be aimed at a family audience. James Gunn has teased that Krypto is a “terrible, terrible dog” throughout these films, getting up to mischief while his owner Superman is busy protecting the Earth. The Krypto The Superdog short movies will offer viewers a fun and engaging glimpse into the pooch’s life inside the DC universe and have the potential to be the best project within James Gunn’s shared world.

The 1 Thing in James Gunn’s Superman Movie That Mark Waid ‘Never Thought I’d Live’ to See

Acclaimed comic book writer Mark Waid reveals the one thing in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie he never thought he would live to see.

Krypto The Superdog has always been a firm fan-favorite character among comic book readers. Many DC Comics fans consider him to be one of the best comic pets. He is Clark Kent’s most loyal buddy, sacrificing his life in the comics to save Clark Kent’s life by biting the Kryptonite Man’s throat, and dying of Kryptonite radiation in the process. Krypto possesses the same power set as Superman, being able to fly, as well as possessing heat vision, freeze breath, and x-ray vision. This makes him the ideal comic book character for dedicated dog lovers, giving pet owners a protagonist to root for throughout the Superman comics.

While Superman is known as a member of the Justice League, Krypto has also teamed up with a few of DC’s most famous superhero teams. He has most notably allied himself with the Legion of Super Pets, who have been a prominent presence in the DC Universe ever since February 1962’s “Adventure Comics” #293. Krypto The Superdog joined the Space Canine Patrol Agents in “Superboy” #131, who protect the galaxy against several ruthless extra-terrestrial criminals. The Space Canine Patrol Agents are a lovable bunch of alien canines, who are ripe for a live-action adaptation, and Krypto’s short films if successful, could open the door for the team to be adapted in the DCU’s future.

The biggest indicator of Krypto The Superdog’s enduring appeal is how he has been the subject of a few comic spin-offs, since 2006. The initial “Krypto The Superdog” spin-off title ran for six issues. Superman’s pet dog is receiving his latest solo title this Summer, “Krypto; The Last Dog Of Krypton.” His new series begins on Wednesday, June 18, and will offer readers a glimpse into what can be expected from his upcoming short movies. “Krypto: The Last Dog Of Krypton” will run for five issues, showing the human race through Krypto’s eyes when he first lands on Earth. There has never been a better time to be a Krypto The Superdog fan than 2025, with the pooch set to take the world by storm through both the films and the comic book medium.

Smallville Co-Creator Says James Gunn’s Superman Might Be What’s Holding Up the Animated Sequel Series

One of Smallville’s co-creators shares why he thinks an animated sequel hasn’t gotten the green light, and it involves James Gunn’s Superman movie.

The greatest stories starring Krypto The Superdog have not come from the comics but from the animated medium. The TV Series Krypto The Superdog charmed young audiences in 2005, leaving viewers who grew up with the show hoping for a future Spider-Verse-style movie. Krypto The Superdog charts how the titular dog landed on Earth and became the young lad Kevin Whitney’s pet. While Kevin knows of Krypto’s secret identity, Kevin’s family believes Krypto to be an ordinary dog, but unbeknownst to them, he is a superhero, sneaking off to fight criminals. The animated series features a colorful roster of characters, including Krypto’s best friend Streaky, and Batman’s stern pooch Ace The Bathound, but Krypto is the star of the show. His protectiveness around Kevin, and determination to keep the world safe from nefarious crooks, make him endearing to watch.

DC’s League Of Super-Pets, to a lesser extent, captures the character’s heroic spirit. It sees Krypto and his allies Ace, PB, Merton, and Chip, team up to save the Justice League, after they are kidnapped by Lex Luthor and the nefarious guinea pig, Lulu. DC’s League Of Super Pets does an excellent job of depicting Krypto’s mischievous personality, such as when he steals the sausage from Superman’s hotdog. Dwayne Johnson is brilliant casting as Krypto, delivering a lively performance as the superdog. The film reunites him with his frequent co-star Kevin Hart, who voices Ace The Bathound, and the duo once again form a hilarious double act throughout the feature.

Krypto Is An Important Part Of The Superman Mythos

Krypto The Superdog’s strong link to Krypton makes him an important part of the Superman mythos. Before Clark was Superman, he was known by the name Kal-El on his homeworld. Krypto was Kal-El’s pet dog when he was a toddler. Kal-El’s father, Jor-El, used Krypto as a test subject for the rocket that would eventually send Kal-El to Earth. Unfortunately, the rocket was knocked off-course, before eventually landing on Earth years later. This makes Krypto The Superdog Clark’s closest connection to his early life on Krypton, and the family he lost in the planet’s destruction.

After arriving on Earth, Krypto becomes a key member of Clark, Lois, and their son, Kon-El’s family life. He poses as an ordinary dog named Skip. His civilian disguise sees him don a brown dye patch on his back, before transforming into his cape and golden collar to go crimefighting. When Clark discovered Krypto’s identity as a superhero canine, he developed a unique means of calling Krypto when he needed his assistance. Clark uses radio waves to summon him to fight by his side, and Superman and Krypto’s teamwork makes them a dynamic duo.

Superman’s Evolving Origins, Explained

Superman’s origins as Kal-El and Clark Kent have changed in DC Comics, television and film, allowing the iconic superhero to evolve over time.

James Gunn’s Superman teaser shows Krypto to be essential to the upcoming movie. When a beaten-up Clark Kent collapses near the Fortress of Solitude, it is Krypto who he turns to in his hour of need. Wincing in pain, Clark weakly asks Krypto to take him “home”, and Krypto obliges, dragging Superman by his cape. Clark and Krypto’s strong bond is going to be a major focus of the Superman movie, showing viewers through Clark’s eyes why they should care for this adorable dog. The Puppy Bowl footage also confirms that this version of Krypto will carry the same powers as his comic book counterpart, displaying Krypto in flight.

Krypto The Superdog is undeniably the coolest pooch in comic book media. His superpowered abilities make him an extremely fun aspect of DC’s comics history, and his devotion to his owner Clark Kent results in Krypto becoming one of Superman’s most likable allies. 2025 promises to be Krypto The Superdog’s biggest year in popular culture since his amazing animated series, and the character is wholly deserving of his upcoming short movies. The Krypto shorts are destined to be the jewel in the DCU’s crown, especially as James Gunn has done a fantastic job with animal characters in the past, with Rocket Raccoon and King Shark being the standout characters of Guardians Of The Galaxy and The Suicide Squad respectively.
