Yes, the second official, canonical project in the new DCU is a comic book

If ever there was a sign of closer communication between the studio and publishing arms of DC since the formation of DC Studios, it’s today’s announcement of Peacemaker Presents: The Vigilante/Eagly Double Feature — a comic set in the new DCU studio canon debuting months before the first official DC Studios movie.

While Peacemaker Presents is far from the first comic book series spin-off from a movie or movie franchise — Marvel released a number of comic book series set between MCU projects in the first couple of Phases of the property, and DC itself ran a three-issue series titled The Flash: The Fastest Man Alive — the new series is in the unique position to not only include the participation (via creative consultancy) of the show creator, but also be, officially, only the second project to take place in the new DC Universe timeline that will, officially, begin with December’s Creature Commandos on Max.

(For those curious, Peacemaker Presents takes place between the first and second seasons of the Peacemaker show… but because of the relaunch of DC’s onscreen properties as a result of the formation of DC Studios under the control of James Gunn and Peter Safran, the first season of Peacemaker is not actually canonical to the new DCU. Yes, it’s complicated; don’t think too hard about it.)

Or, to put it another way: we’re getting a DC Studios Universe comic before we’re getting a DC Studios movie. What does this mean for DC moving forward? That remains to be seen — but all we’re saying is, don’t be too surprised if there’s a movie Superman comic before James Gunn’s cinematic reboot hits theaters next July.
