‘It Was Always Part Of The Plan’ James Gunn Says On Casting Jason Momoa As DCU’s Lobo

James Gunn admitted that among the first things he considered when DC Studios was announced was Jason Momoa’s casting as Lobo.

Momoa recently sat down for an interview with ScreenRant to promote his new movie, A Minecraft Movie, which is coming out next month. During the interview, he opened up about finally playing his dream role. “Well, this is the role I’ve always wanted to play. That’s the comic I loved, so I’m really nervous about it. It’s kind of a no-brainer to play this character. It’s pretty big,” Momoa said. The Fast X star was careful not to spoil fans, but he dropped a major hint about its appearance compared to the comics. Momoa said:

I don’t want to give away too much, but I mean, we look pretty dead on, exactly like the character, and he’s pretty rough and gruff and… I’ll say the bike’s really cool.

Safran previously discussed Lobo’s appearance in Supergirl in an interview with The Nerds of Color in February. He said that its director, Craig Gillespie, was a “great collaborator” when they worked on Schoenaerts’, Alcock’s and Momoa’s looks for the film. When asked when fans would see Momoa’s first official look as Lobo, Gunn said it would not happen anytime soon. “It’s probably going to be a while, to be frank,” he said. Gunn said in another interview that Momoa reached out to him shortly after DC Studios was announced to show his interest in playing the intergalactic bounty hunter. Since that text, Gunn was convinced to give the role to Momoa. When the Justice League star finally announced his casting on Instagram, Gunn commented on Momoa’s post welcoming him to DCU.

It’s not difficult to transform Momoa into Lobo because he looks like him. He has Lobo’s massive physique, towering height, muscular build, long, messy hair and beard, and intimidating presence. Momoa also shares Lobo’s larger-than-life personality and it’s no sweat for the actor to portray Lobo’s sarcastic and no-nonsense attitude with his versatility. Lobo is loud, crude and hilarious. The anti-hero doesn’t care about rules. Momoa has already portrayed the same rebellious energy in his previous projects — as Khal Drogo in Games of Thrones, Arthur Curry in Aquaman and Baba Voss in See.

Lobo is also an intergalactic biker, causing chaos wherever he goes. Momoa shares the same passion and pursues it in his 2024 On The Roam docuseries, where he embarks on a journey across the United States to explore art, adventure and craftmanship using his bike. Momoa was born to play the role, and it’s exciting to see him add fun and chaotic force to the DC Universe. He will surely not disappoint, especially now that he’s playing his dream role.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow hits theaters on June 26, 2026.
