WARNING: Contains Potential spoilers for Absolute Superman #4!Absolute Superman has been defined by his lack of a home, a family, and a deep sense of identity—an existence that’s as heartbreaking as it is isolated. But now, it seems the Man of Steel has attracted the attention of a potential ally: a group of freedom fighters. Sounds like the perfect match, right? Think again.
…Absolute Superman presents the Man of Steel with the opportunity to forge his own following…
In Jason Aaron & Rafa Sandoval’s Absolute Superman #4, Lois Lane continues her search for the mysterious Man of Steel. However, Lois isn’t the only one on a mission—she soon discovers that she’s being followed by none other than Jimmy Olsen.
But instead of the friendly, slightly goofy Daily Planet photojournalist fans know and love, Lois recognizes Jimmy as a member of the Omega Men. A group with a long-standing history in DC Comics, the Omega Men have clearly undergone a transformation in this Darkseid-created universe, just like the other characters and factions of mainstream continuity. So, are they allies to Superman—or potential future foes?

Before diving into the dynamic between Superman and the Omega Men, it’s important to first understand who the Omega Men are. In Earth-Prime continuity, the Omega Men are typically depicted as a superhero group within the DC universe. Led by Primus and Tigorr, the team consists of alien freedom fighters operating mainly within the Vega star system—a notorious region known for its dangers. Key members of the group include Kalista (Primus’s wife), the invulnerable Broot, the godlike Nimbus, the sisters Harpis and Demonia, Felicity (the last of Tigorr’s species), the cyborg physician Doc, and Shlagen, the team’s mechanic.
However, Absolute Superman has already flipped the lore of this group on its head. None of the original members, as far as we know, have yet appeared. Instead, readers are introduced to Omega Prime, whose true name and identity remain a mystery, as well as Jimmy Olsen, who holds a lower Alpha ranking within the Omega Men. Another key deviation from their typical portrayal is the fact that the Omega Men are operating on Earth rather than the Vega star system. This version of the group is deeply involved in Earth’s conflicts, acting as a rebellion, and appears to be a direct enemy of the world-wide militarized police force known as the Lazarus Corps.

Superman eventually appears and intervenes in the confrontation between Lois, Jimmy, and Omega Prime. Despite Kal-El stopping Omega Prime’s attempt to kill Lois, the Omega Men member is thrilled to see him. She immediately contacts the rest of the Omega Men, informing them that they’ve found Superman. Omega Prime then approaches him, saying, “Superman… the Omega Men stand ready to help you in your fight against Lazarus.” This makes it clear that she, along with the Omega Men, are eager to ally with him, even viewing him as a figure to rally behind—almost elevating him to a god-like status in their fight for freedom.
In essence, Absolute Superman presents the Man of Steel with the opportunity to forge his own following and truly embody the god-like persona often associated with his character. However, despite Omega Prime and the Omega Men offering their loyalty and readiness to serve as his soldiers, Kal-El seems uninterested in the alliance. He interrupts Omega Prime’s declarations of loyalty by literally throwing her away from him. At this point, it seems that Superman has no desire to team up with the Omega Men, but given their persistence, it’s likely that their pursuit of him will continue—and a potential team-up could be on the horizon.

While there is potential for a future team-up between the Omega Men and Superman, especially given their shared enemy, Lazarus Corp, it’s far more likely that Kal-El’s connection to the Omega Men will be through Jimmy alone. As mentioned earlier, Jimmy is a member of the Omega Men, but this issue reveals that he is a low-ranking member, one who questions the orders of his superiors while also being in awe of the Man of Steel. Therefore, Screen Rant predicts that Superman will soon have an ally in Jimmy—but not in the form of the entire Omega Men as it seems Jimmy is on the verge of defecting.
