They say that a change is as good as a rest. Rene Montoya knows a fair bit about change but has never had much luck resting. This leads the former police officer to a new role in The Question: All Along the Watchtower.

Written by Alex Segura, with art by Cian Tormey, the new DC All-In series establishes Rene as the sheriff of the Justice League Watchtower. The new Justice League Unlimited has many enemies, and the expanded team and their base are inviting targets. This establishes a whole new beat for The Question to walk, looking for the gaps and issues that other heroes often overlook.

Rene Montoya has a most unusual background in the comics. Originally a uniformed police officer in Gotham City, she worked her way up to Detective. She was later chosen by Vic Sage to follow in his footsteps as The Question. More recently, she became the GCPD Commissioner, only to lose her job because of politics. This sets the stage for the new series, and Rene’s recruitment to an unusual role within the Justice League.

“This is a noir story in space and very much embedded in the DC Universe,” Segura noted in a Substack post. “It’s the kind of character-driven mystery I love to read and write. It’s also an exploration of the mythos of DC, with some (hopefully) surprising deep-cuts in terms of lore, character cameos, and Big Bad.”

The Question: All Along the Watchtower #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on November 20, 2024.
