Absolute Power: Task Force VII #3 – Jeremy Adams, Writer; Marco Santucci, Artist; Arif Prianto, Colorist

Ray – 9.5/10

Ray: Jeremy Adams has done a great job with the Flash and Green Lantern corners of the DCU for a while, and I think many people were expecting him to take on the JSA next. We now know that’s Jeff Lemire, but Adams gets to play with that crew in this one-shot – which finds the next of the Amazos on the trail of high-priority target Alan Scott. Alan and the rest of the escapees from the JSA are on the run, and they’ve picked up another hitchhiker – Carol Ferris, who avoided detection when Hal was captured. We know she’s joining the Justice League going forward, so this is a great way to raise her profile as a solo hero. But as the heroes encounter the rogue Amazo, code-named Jadestone, something unusual happens. It makes contact with Alan Scott’s Starheart to absorb its power, gets it – and gets a little something more too. Because now there’s another voice in its head, belaying Waller’s instructions.

Close shave. Via DC Comics.

This is a very interesting take on the Amazos, who have been one-note villains in the first two issues. Here’s a creature created for one purpose, and now a magical encounter is giving it a brief glimpse at something else. Through very little dialogue, Adams is able to convey a fascinating inner conflict for the robot, even as Waller doubles down on her demands and the JSA fights back. There are a lot of little subplots in this issue, such as a great visit to the Oblivion Bar with some excellent cameos and a chance to catch up with Steve Trevor as he escapes captivity and starts to try to undermine Waller from within. This anthology has been the main companion to the lead series, and so far the three issues have shows us some strong glimpses of exactly what the war looks like as it expands to every corner of the DCU. Hope the remaining creative teams pick up the banner Adams put down and run with it.
