Ray – 8.5/10
Ray: This weekly event has kicked off the big show – and the trio of antiheroes at its center is in deep trouble. Harley, Ivy, and Catwoman have been captured, and the sadistic punchline has decided to kill them slowly by dehydrating them in the middle of the desert. The only thing to drink? The mind-controlling energy drink she’s been using. Ivy is fading fast, with Harley and Catwoman not far behind – and all the while, Punchline continues building her gaming empire as she brings in hundreds of rich “high rollers” to hunt regenerating wildlife. The ethical implications of this game are pretty chilling, with it being very reminiscent of the brilliant “Westworld”. How far can technology go before you’re essentially creating life to suffer for your amusement? And as the rich gamers continue their sadistic exercise, White Rabbit – captured and forced to work for Punchline – becomes more and more disturbed.

I’ll be honest – I don’t understand White Rabbit. She’s an odd character with odd powers, so having her play such a key role in this story kind of throws me a bit. That being said, the ability she displays this issue is kind of hilarious, and plays on a great meme, so I’ll roll with it. The villains are despicable, especially Punchline who is at her most chaotic this issue. This is the first story in a while to really give her her own identity as a villain outside of Joker’s shadow, so kudos for that. The ending gets into big-scale action as the Sirens try to chase down Punchline, only to be confronted with an army of mind-controlled minions in what essentially becomes a zombie rush. It does feel like there is a lot of story left to be told with only one issue left in this miniseries, but the fast pace of the story has made this a lot of fun to follow and a good one-month replacement for the three books of the leads.
