Ray: The scrambled powers around the DCU have caused no small amount of chaos – and it’s a lot worse than anyone knows. As Ray Palmer and Ryan Choi desperately try to bring things under control, a de-powered Captain Atom starts to figure out that there are some dirty little secrets they’ve kept under wraps – especially once he finds out what’s become of Atom Smasher, one of the first people they used the stabilizer on. But he’s become so addicted to having his god-like powers that he doesn’t let that stop him – and once it’s discovered where his powers have gone, it’s even more urgent. Got to say, the visual of a titanium-skinned nuclear grizzly bear has got to be one of my favorite in comics in a while, and it’s exactly why I love comics so much. The action in this issue is far better than the first, and it’s the kind of ridiculous over-the-top stuff I love out of DC.

But once Atom gets his powers back, it’s a very different comic. This book works non-linearly, telling its story in several different timelines. While the Captain Atom we saw in the first issue seemed more sane than the one in Jenny Sparks, that starts to change once he has his powers back. The human mind isn’t really meant to handle this level of power, and he’s coming up with a solution to it – one that might have unintended consequences. This issue also features the return of a major DC villain who was…looking a lot different the last time we saw him, and may also be a victim of the power shuffle. There’s a lot going on in this issue, with a ton of ambition and weird sci-fi concepts that are going to be a lot of fun to explore. It also gives a great spotlight to a trio of heroes who are rarely in the lead. So far, all the post-Absolute Power tie-ins have been a great set of stories.
