Ray – 9.5/10
Ray: Telling essentially one ongoing story for its entire run, G. Willow Wilson’s Poison Ivy has been one of DC’s most compelling and consistent titles for a while. This new era has added a ton of new wrinkles, including Ivy’s ex-girlfriend The Gardener running a terror organization in her name and a growing possible war between the Green and the Grey that Ivy is caught in the middle of. This issue begins with Ivy wounded and seeking refuge in the woods, when she’s found by Xylon, the towering and terrifying avatar of the Grey. Ivy thinks he’s here to take revenge for her appropriation of the Grey – but he’s actually seeking a truce. Both the Green and Grey are dying at the hands of the Red and humanity in particularly, and time is running out. This turn into cosmic storytelling is fascinating, especially since this issue plays with the very format of the comic itself…
Because it’s a flip book! The first half of the story tells Ivy’s story, and ends with her running into Janet. And then we turn things around and follow Janet’s half of the story, as Ivy’s newest ally investigates what’s going on in the strange town they’ve found. But as she wanders into the woods, she’s met by a representative of the Green – who very clearly doesn’t like her much, but needs her help. I’ve long been wondering what exactly Janet’s long-term purpose is going to be in this book, and the idea that she’s being set up to betray Ivy to the Green is a dark and potentially disturbing turn. However, the end of this issue shows she’s clearly deeply conflicted about the chance she’s been offered. This is a fascinating book that’s managed to expand not just the world of its characters, but the world of the cosmic DCU. I hope Wilson gets to write it as long as she wants.
