Ray – 9.5/10
Ray: This series is wrapping up after next issue, making it feel more like an extended Black Label graphic novel than a traditional DC series, and that’s where the villains of Gotham work best, I think. This story has taken us deeper into the mind of Harvey Dent and his villainous alter-ego than we’ve ever gone before, revealing the roots of his twisted protector personality and his obsession with games of chance. Now, pushed beyond his limits, he’s literally chained himself up and is operating the White Church from behind the scenes – allowing his student, Lake Cantrell, to serve as its face. The bond between these two, while it developed very quickly, seems to be genuine – which makes Lake a vulnerability for Harvey as he tries to keep Two-Face under control. And as Lake oversees a fraud trial for Warren White, aka the Great White Shark, all those perils come home to roost.
The White Church comes under attack by Die, a new supervillain who has an obsession with Two-Face and a gambling-based gimmick of her own. She throws dice to determine the fate of her victims, essentially forcing them all into a high-stakes game. After shooting the judge’s bodyguard, she pulls Lake into a hostage situation, one the young overseer plays to the hilt, giving her just enough time for Two-Face to make his decision, flip his coin, and enter the fray. That’s where we find out exactly who Die is to Harvey – maybe – and the story enters a complicated new chapter. There’s been one player who has been missing from this story since the start, as Harvey tries to make a fresh start, and bringing them in now is the perfect way to bring it to a close. I’m not sure where Ward is going for the final act, but I can’t wait to see how this fantastic series comes to a close.
