As Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) gears up to play the DC Universe’s Supergirl, Sasha Calle (who played the character in The Flash) has some exciting words of encouragement for her replacement. The beloved character is finally being given a standalone movie, titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The movie sits in second place on the new DC Universe’s production slate, just behind James Gunn’s Superman (which releases next year). It has been rumored that Alcock will make her Supergirl debut alongside her fellow Kryptonian in Superman before going to helm her own standalone movie.
Speaking to IndieWire at the Toronto International Film Festival — where the actress is promoting her new movie On Swift Horses — Sasha Calle gave Milly Alcock some valuable advice ahead of her Supergirl debut in the DC Universe. Calle was the first to play Supergirl on the big screen in 40 years, appearing in The Flash. She was expected to have a long tenure as the character. However, her version of the character was lost as James Gunn and Peter Safran took over to reboot the DC Universe. “Have so much fun,” Calle said, wholeheartedly embracing Milly Alcock as the new Supergirl. The actress didn’t give any practical advice about acting in a supersuit, but did compliment Alcock, saying she looked perfect for the role. Calle continued:
“You look so badass. I love that. Yeah, just f*cking kill it. Have fun.”
Plot details about the DC Universe movie have yet to be revealed. However, Gunn has already confirmed the film will be based on the DC Comics miniseries of the same name, written by Tom King with art by Bilquis Evely. Unlike the ever-optimistic Big Blue Boy Scout, also known as Superman, Woman of Tomorrow features a nihilistic Supergirl who is enlisted by a young alien girl desperately seeking revenge on those who destroyed her world. It is unclear how closely the new movie will adhere to the comic book storyline.
It feels like a lifetime ago that James Gunn released the video outlining his and Peter Safran’s plans for the new DC Universe. As well as Superman and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Gunn also announced a Brave and the Bold movie, a Swamp Thing horror film, and a Booster Gold movie, among others. However, it is on TV that the DC Universe will officially start.
Josh Brolin Will Not Be Playing Hal Jordan in HBO’s Green Lantern TV Show
Josh Brolin has passed on playing Hal Jordan in the DCU, meaning the search is on for a new star before Lanterns begins filming January 2025.
As Gunn says in the video, “it’s our job to come in and make sure the DCU is connected in film, television, gaming, and animation.” Gunn’s plans for gaming have yet to be announced, and the movies-to-TV crossover has already been confirmed through Nathan Fillion’s casting as Guy Gardner in both Superman and the Lanterns series. But Gunn and Safran are making a bold choice to kick off the new DC Universe with the animated Creature Commandos series. Debuting on Max this December, the Creature Commandos are the undead offshoot of the Suicide Squad. Alongside the new group of “heroes,” the series will see Viola Davis reprise her original DCEU role as Amanda Waller in the animated series, before the character jumps over into live-action in her own standalone series, Waller.
