Could the Arrowverse have finally made its way to the silver screen? Stephen Amell confirms canceled plans for a Green Arrow film by Warner Bros.
The Arrowverse encapsulates an interesting time of DC’s history. While Warner Bros. struggled to find a foothold for its cinematic universe on the silver screen, the franchise was dominating the airways on the CW, with Stephen Amell serving as the Robert Downey Jr. of the small screen. However, it seems there might have been plans for Arrow to make its leap to theaters.
“We tried to do that,” Amell explained when asked about a possible Arrow movie on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast. “To my understanding, it just got killed at the studio level from people that, I think, were making decisions…that were fear-based.”
Given Warner Bros’ history of weird rules when it came to the CW, it’s not a shock that they would kill a potential Arrow movie in the cradle. However, given how popular the Arrowverse was, especially among DC fans struggling to find consistent media of their favorite characters, it’s a shock that Stephen Amell never got at least a direct to TV movie. However, it seems the possibility may not be completely gone just yet!
With the Arrowverse finally coming to an end with this final season of Superman and Lois, many fans have been wondering if the long ride is truly over. Yet it seems Stephen Amell has some hope that the franchise could come back on the silver screen. When first asked about an Arrow movie, he admitted it’s a concept that he’s always been fascinated with, even if Warner Bros. killed the original pitch for one back in the day.
“I mean I joked about it because I think that it would be wonderful one these days to go back and do something that was in a medium where I could break bones and drop an F-bomb and just sort of go the ‘hard R’ [rating] version of Arrow.”
Given how restrained the Arrowverse had to be due to the guidelines of the CW, and how far Arrow pushed that envelope in some of its earlier seasons, it would be interesting to see what Stephen Amell and the creative team could do with the budget of a feature film. However, given Warner Bros. Discovery is currently on fire and is in the process of rebooting their own universe on the big screen, it’s likely a possible movie will be on the backburner for quite a while.
The entire series of Arrow is now streaming on Netflix. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the DC Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
