Almost a year after its disastrous release, Rocksteady Games’ live-service shooter Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has ended, revealing a shocking new twist. The game’s final cutscene reveals that the Justice League members killed by eponymous anti-heroes were, in fact, clones.

As a refresher, the original campaign of Suicide Squad showed its members killing the Justice League’s heroes, including the Batman of the Arkham video game series. Fans of the franchise were upset that their favorite Batman, portrayed by Kevin Conroy, was nonchalantly shot point-blank by Harley Quinn.

However, it was always possible that Rocksteady would bring back the heroes through the multiverse, which was introduced at the end of the game’s story. The DC multiverse was a major narrative tool used to push post-launch updates to the game, adding alternate versions of Joker, Deathstroke, and others.

The final cutscene of the game’s season four update reveals that the squad was following Batman’s secret plan all along. What was the plan? The Justice League had created clones of themselves to dupe Brainiac into thinking he was controlling the heroes. The supervillain is defeated by Superman and Batman in his lair. Following that, Superman leads the league in freeing the rest of Brainiac’s victims from his mind control throughout the multiverse.

However, there is one Justice League member who wasn’t a clone: Wonder Woman. The Princess of Themyscira died fighting Superman’s clone in the game’s original campaign.

As for the Squad, they are freed from Amanda Waller’s control by Hack, Lawless, and Toyboy, who disable the miniature bombs embedded in their heads. Waller is forced to let the Squad off the hook unless she wants Lois Lane to reveal the A.R.G.U.S’ secrets to the world.

The ending is presented as a digital illustration of panels inspired by comic books, suggesting that Rocksteady didn’t have enough resources to animate and produce a proper cutscene featuring the heroes. The developer was hit with layoffs at the tail end of 2024, with the remaining staff reportedly co-developing a director’s cut version of Hogwarts Legacy.

Season 4 episode 8 also adds new twists to the medieval Elseworld map, three tiers of the Libra infamy weapons set, and new notorious weapons. Following the game’s shutdown, players can continue their adventure in the offline mode.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation owners can get it for free through PS Plus this month.
