DC Comics has unveiled a brand-new box set collection of four iconic graphic novels that inspired James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie. The Superman Box Set will arrive next year, a month before Gunn’s first live-action DCU entry, which hits theaters in July 2025.
DC’s The Superman Box Set includes softcover editions of Grant Morrison and Frank Quietly’s All-Star Superman, Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s Superman for All Seasons, Alan Moore and Curt Swan’s What Ever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? and Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross. The set retails for $85. DC Studios co-head Gunn, who is very active on social media, shared the comic book influences for his upcoming film, initially titled Superman: Legacy, which will feature a more altruistic and hopeful Man of Steel than Zack Snyder’s most recent iteration.

The Superman Box Set
Morrison and Quitely’s twelve-issue All-Star Superman debuted in November 2005, featuring Superman, who is dying from overexposure to the sun, trying to accomplish several heroic feats and make peace with the world before he dies. The book received critical acclaim for its emotional story, characterization, writing, and artwork. The four-issue Superman for All Seasons, helmed by Batman: The Long Halloween‘s legendary creative team of Loeb and Sale, arrived in 1998. Narrated by different Superman comic characters, such as Lois Lane and Lex Luthor, the book follows Superman across the four annual seasons.
Moore and Swan’s 1986 What Ever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow? was an imaginary story of Silver Age Superman paying homage to the character’s history as he was being rebooted after the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, and before John Byrne’s The Man of Steel series. The four-issue Kingdom Come by Waid and Ross hit comic stands in 1996. Set in an alternate future of the DC Universe, the book featured an older version of Superman and the Justice League. Superman’s House of El crest design in the series inspired Gunn’s DCU Superman symbol.

James Gunn’s Superman Has Wrapped Filming
DC Studios’ Superman has wrapped filming and Gunn recently revealed he was gifted the Superman #167 comic by Nicholas Hoult when the Lex Luthor actor finished shooting his scenes. “Thanks to [Nicholas Hoult] for this incredible wrap gift!” Gunn tweeted. The movie, which sees David Corenswet play the Last Son of Krypton, will arrive on July 11, 2025.
