Doomsday is a calamity for the DC Universe, but if one hero ever turned bad, they would easily outmatch the monster. Few in the DC Universe are tougher than Doomsday. He was successful in killing Superman, and was even able to put a hurting on Darkseid. It might seem that no one can defeat Doomsday, but one surprise hero from the Golden Age could easily snuff him out.

In a thread on the DC Comics Subreddit, fan Artseid postulated a fascinating, if not terrifying, scenario: what if the Spectre turned evil? Artseid believed that if the Spectre went rogue, then he would be a “headache” for the Justice League and the rest of the DC Universe. Artseid brought the question up to spur discussion of other heroes who would be bad news if they became evil, but fans instead used the thread to discuss the Spectre, and how badly he has been handled by DC Comics since his first appearance.

The Spectre Has a Long History in the DC Universe

Writers and Artists Have Struggled to Make the Spectre Interesting

When the Spectre debuted in 1940’s More Fun Comics #52, there was not anyone else like him in American comics.

When the Spectre debuted in 1940’s More Fun Comics #52, there was not anyone else like him in American comics. While supernatural characters had been a part of the comic book landscape since the debut of Doctor Occult in 1935, the Spectre represented a coming of age for the idea of mystical heroes. The Spectre, who was once corrupt police detective Jim Corrigan, was murdered, but his soul was sent back to Earth by the Presence (DC’s stand-in for the Christian god) to punish evildoers. From there, the supernatural side of the DC Universe exploded.

The Spectre was created by Bernard Bailey and Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel.

The Spectre is also one of DC’s most powerful characters, which has led to major issues making him interesting and relatable. Several commenters on Artseid’s thread agreed this was a hard thing to accomplish. As an aspect of God, the Spectre’s power levels are, in theory, off the charts. Over the course of his 80+ year career, the Spectre has achieved some amazing feats, such as transmuting matter and the ability to teleport seemingly anywhere. Fans on the thread point out that most creators decide to make the Spectre relatable by having him easily defeated by some villains.

Who is Doomsday? Superman’s Murderer, Explained

Doomsday Could Totally Take Down Darkseid

If the Spectre represents power on a vast and cosmic scale, then Doomsday is the embodiment of sheer brute strength. Created by colonizing scientists on prehistoric Krypton, Doomsday was designed to be the ultimate weapon. He was engineered to already be strong and large, but his creator also gave him the ability to adapt to whatever kills him, meaning a hero only gets one shot at Doomsday. Doomsday has proven to be one of DC’s heaviest hitters, laying waste to a portion of the country in his initial rampage, and taking Superman’s life.

Doomsday Is a DC Calamity, And These 10 Superpowers Prove the Being Is a God

Superman regularly goes up against some of the most powerful villains the DC Universe has to offer, but Doomsday stands above most of them.

It would appear that no sentient being can kill Doomsday, but the forces of nature are another matter entirely. As seen in the conclusion of 1994’s Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey, the time-traveling Waverider took Doomsday to the end of time, where powerful forces of entropy crush anything out of existence–including the monster. Doomsday has returned many times since, most recently in the pages of Superman, where he is the newest incarnation of the Time Trapper. With these powers, it can be assumed that entropy will no longer kill Doomsday–which would make him virtually unstoppable.

The Spectre’s Source of Power All But Guarantees He Can Beat Doomsday

Not Even Doomsday Can Fight Back Against Universal Forces

Which is where the Spectre comes in, as he alone could be capable of toppling the monster. Entropy is a powerful force in the DC Universe, but the Presence’s power goes even beyond that. As a stand-in for God, the Presence is a force of both creation and destruction, although it seems like more often it is the latter. By equating the Presence with God, DC has ascribed vast powers to both he and the Spectre. Entropy may be powerful, but it was created by the Presence. In a case of “might makes right,” the Presence trumps entropy.

A fight between the Spectre and Doomsday could take a number of forms. The Spectre might try to punish Doomsday for the centuries of destruction and death he has left in his wake, but given the creature’s low intellect and lack of self-awareness, this might prove difficult. Instead, the Spectre should use his powers, which come from God, to crush Doomsday to death, or simply cause him to just disappear. The likelihood that Doomsday could bounce back from a fight with an agent of God is slim, giving the Spectre the edge he needs to defeat the monster.
