It’s easy to think that there isn’t much change in the world of superheroes. Yet DC has been introducing some powerhouse characters since the start of the new century. While everyone knows who the most popular characters tend to be, the most powerful can change when DC Comics introduces some new villains or heroes.
Some of these characters have become major characters in the DC Universe. Others have just been part of some of DC Comics’ biggest storylines. Regardless, they’re some of the most powerful characters that have ever existed, capable of defeating entire armies or altering reality whenever they want.
10 Most Rereadable DC Comics

10 Relic Survived A Different Version Of The Universe To Gain Incredible Powers
First Appearance: Green Lantern Vol. 5 #21 (2013) By Robert Venditti & Billy Tan
Relic was one of the first characters introduced to the Green Lantern corner of DC after Geoff Johns left. He’s similar to Galactus in that he’s a survivor from a previous version of the universe who gained more power, making it to the current iteration. He theorized that people using the emotional spectrum were draining the universe dry in his original reality. When his universe ended, he decided to keep things from happening again by stopping anyone who used the power of the emotional spectrum.
Due to the energies he was exposed to, Relic’s body and power were enhanced several times over as he transformed into a massive giant-type being. In addition to wielding incredible scientific technology, he’s also invulnerable to most forms of damage. When he began attacking the different Lantern Corps, none of them were able to stop him. The only thing that saved them was White Lantern Kyle Rayner trapping him inside the Source Wall.
9 Volthoom Wields The Full Power Of The Emotional Spectrum
First Appearance: Green Lantern Annual Vol. 5 #1 (2012) By Geoff Johns & Ethan Van Sciver
Volthoom comes from the realm of Earth-15, where an alien race wiped out his home planet, forcing him to run away. However, Volthoom had already discovered the emotional electromagnetic spectrum and used it to create the Travel Lantern, which allowed him to travel anywhere in the multiverse. Eventually, he landed on Earth-0, where he worked with the Maltusians to pioneer technology that would lead to the Green Lanterns.
With that technology, Volthoom became the First Lantern and tapped into the power of the full emotional spectrum, which altered the way he thought. As the First Lantern, Volthoom wields one of the most powerful rings ever created. He’s functionally immortal, and his connection to the spectrum means he’ll always come back, even if someone attempts to kill him. Wielding the full emotional energy spectrum lets him manipulate reality and easily defeat most of the Lantern Corps without needing help.
8 The Upside-Down Man Is Made Of Concentrated Magic
First Appearance: Justice League Dark Vol. 2 #1 (2018) By James Tynion IV and Álvaro Martínez Bueno
The Upside-Down Man is connected to the very beginning of Magic in the DC Universe. When magic was created, it was split into two halves—the light side, controlled by Hecate, and the dark side, which the Upside-Down Man controlled. Though he was sealed away for ages, when he was eventually freed with The Otherkind, he waged war on all beings who relied on magic.
DC Comics’ 10 Most Disappointing Legacy Heroes
DC Comics has some of the best legacy characters ever, but some of these sidekicks and replacements failed to measure up to their predecessors.
The Upside-Down Man can defeat some of the most powerful magic users in the DC Universe. His power comes directly from The Source, and initially, he was capable of using magic without any drawbacks, never paying “costs” for casting spells. Though that power was eventually taken away, even without it, he can alter reality and reconstruct other people’s bodies entirely at will.
7 Imperiex Prime Has Destroyed The Universe Before
First Appearance: Superman Vol. 2 #153 (2000) By Jeph Loeb and Mike McKone
Imperiex-Prime’s existence dates back to the beginning of the universe. He represents pure entropy and often destroys planets he finds on his travels when he believes they aren’t worthy. It’s also believed he’s destroyed the universe multiple times in the past to create it and begin anew. Imperiex’s power was so great that Superman teamed up with one of his strongest enemies in Mongul to battle him, and after narrowly winning, he discovered it was only a simple probe.
With his incredible power, Imperiex not only destroyed planets on his path to Earth but eventually began wiping out galaxies. His incredible power required Superman to plunge himself into the sun to gain a strength boost large enough to stop him. It still required the help of the entire superhero community, survivors from dozens of planets, and Darkseid before they could slow him down. However, since he was made of pure energy, the only thing they could do to stop him was send him to the beginning of time.
6 Omega Titans Were Meant To Watch Over The Source Wall
First Appearance: Dark Nights: Metal #6 (2018) By Scott Snyder & Greg Capullo
Introduced at the end of Dark Nights: Metal, the Omega Titans are some of the oldest beings in the DC Universe. Each of them possesses part of a fundamental part of life–Entropy, Wisdom, Wonder, and Mystery–and all operate off the belief that their energy is the dominant force in the universe. The group is dangerous for their Omega Seeds, which they plant on a planet and wait for them to grow, feeding on that planet’s dominant energy.
The Omega Titans were created to watch over the prison containing Perpetua, creator of the DC multiverse. When the Source Wall cracked, the Justice League began looking into how best to shut them down, but none had the power to scratch them. To even defeat them, they could only turn the Cosmic Seeds against the Omega Titans to force them to feed on one of their own. This means that the only thing capable of stopping them usually is one another.
5 Ion Wielded All The Central Power Battery’s Energy
First Appearance: Green Lantern Vol. 3 #145 (2002) By Judd Winick and Dale Eaglesham
Before the emotional energy spectrum existed, Kyle Rayner became Ion for a different reason. He absorbed Hal Jordan’s leftover energy after sacrificing himself to reactivate the sun. Later, he absorbed even more energy from a cosmic entity known as Oblivion.
10 Strongest Green Lanterns From Different Planets
Earth’s numerous members of the GLC usually take the spotlight, but a few Green Lanterns like Stel, Mogo and Kilowog have also showcased great will.
With all the energy from the Central Power Battery inside him, Ion had powers equal to the gods. He could move across time, be anywhere in the universe at once, and alter reality if he chose. This version of Ion was omnipotent, yet he surrendered the power to re-create the Central Power Battery.
4 Superboy Prime Can Alter Reality With His Punches
First Appearance: Infinite Crisis #1 (2005) By Geoff Johns & Phil Jimenez
Though Superboy-Prime was introduced before Crisis on Infinite Earths, the character fans recognize today got his beginning in Infinite Crisis. In his own universe, Superboy-Prime was just a kid who happened to share the same name as Clark Kent. Bullied by his classmates for his name and nerdy hobbies, his world changed when he realized he was his world’s only hero. He battled to protect the multiverse from the Anti-Monitor, only to lose his world.
After spending decades trapped in an alternate dimension, Superboy-Prime finally punched his way out and began taking his rage out on heroes he believed weren’t “heroic enough.” Wielding pre-Crisis Superman levels of strength, Superboy-Prime is capable of some absurd feats. He’s capable of altering reality with his strength, and he’s battled multiple cosmic-level threats. On Earth-51, he battled the cosmic-powered Monarch and defeated him in battle, even surviving that world’s destruction. Later, he fought The Darkest Knight with his full strength and caused so much damage the Darkest Knight was forced to send him back to his homeworld.
3 The Darkest Knight Manipulated Everyone To Gain Power Beyond His Wildest Dreams
First Appearance: Dark Days: The Casting #1 (2017) By Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo
The Darkest Knight was originally the Batman Who Laughs, a Batman from the Dark Multiverse. This version of Batman finally went too far and killed the Joker, which resulted in him being infected with a toxin that transformed him into a being like the Joker. With that transformation, this Batman destroyed and subjugated his world before finally making it into the normal multiverse.
Though defeated in Metal, the Batman Who Laughs got a second opportunity to destroy everything when he took over the power of the Final Bruce Wayne, a Batman treated with Doctor Manhattan’s energy. Calling himself the Darkest Knight, he grew his power by absorbing Crisis energy from the Moebius Chair after tricking Wally West and the other superheroes. With this power, the Darkest Knight was able to battle Perpetua, creator of their multiverse, wielding near omnipotent power and capable of throwing around planets like toys.
2 Perpetua Created The Multiverse
First Appearance: Justice League Vol. 4 #8 (2018) By James Tynion IV and Mikel Janin
Perpetua is one of The Hands responsible for creating the multiverse. Perpetua created a multiverse of her own once already. She created a multiverse that would perpetually renew itself against the wishes of her own brothers and sisters.
First 15 Justice League Members Who Became Villains (In Chronological Order)
While the Justice League has always been DC’s premiere superteam, a few heroic members like Green Lantern and Red Tornado broke bad over the years.
Perpetua wields near limitless power thanks to The Source. She created beings like the Monitor and Anti-Monitor and their brother, the World Forger, who created the worlds of the multiverse. She can alter reality and destroy or create beings with just a glance. She even combined humanity and Martians to create an army of Apex Predators to fight for her. That doesn’t mean she can’t be defeated, though, as other beings who gain even more Source power can and have defeated her in the past.
1 Cosmic Raptor Exists To Stop Beings From Misusing The Power Of The Source
First Appearance: Justice League Vol. 4 #22 (2019) By James Tynion IV and Francis Manapul
Created by the all-powerful Hands, the Cosmic Raptor is made of pure Source energy and shaped like a cosmic bird. Once Perpetua’s children realized her evil, they alerted the Judges of the Source, which resulted in the summoning of the Cosmic Raptor. Not long after that, it confronted Perpetua to learn her true intentions.
After recognizing Perpetua’s mistake, the Cosmic Raptor battled against both her and her Apex Predator armies. Despite being outnumbered, the Raptor easily defeated both her and her children. After that, it trapped her inside the Source Wall and disappeared. Given that the Cosmic Raptor is meant to punish wayward Source beings, its power might be unlimited.
