Someone other than James Gunn almost helmed “The Suicide Squad.” That someone else is Gavin O’Connor, director of “The Accountant” and its more recent sequel “The Accountant 2.” The filmmaker spoke to Collider recently and revealed what happened and why his version of “The Suicide Squad” never saw the light of day.

“It’s another example of the dysfunction of our industry,” O’Connor said. “I had a very specific take. They wanted to do it. I think I was probably three-quarters of the way into the script when they brought in a new regime and all the DC people I was working with were gone. I was writing on the lot, I got a little bungalow there; my writing partner and I would just meet there and write every day.”

James Gunn attends the Los Angeles Premiere of Warner Bros. “The Flash” at Ovation Hollywood on June 12, 2023 in Hollywood, California. Fans got their first look at the upcoming ‘Superman’ movie with a new trailer from writer, director, and co-CEO of DC Studios, James Gunn, and they have a ton of mixed opinions.

Eventually, O’Connor was asked to compromise his vision, and he didn’t go along with it. “There was a knock on the door, and it was the new DC president,” O’Connor recalled. “He said, ‘So where are you with the script?’ I said ‘It’s almost done,’ and he said ‘Can I read it?’ And I said, ‘Well, you can read it when it’s finished.’ A couple of weeks later, I gave it to him, and he said ‘Can you make it a comedy?’ And I said, ‘That’s not what I wrote, and that’s not the agreement I have with the studio.’ He wanted me to make it into a comedy, and I was like, all right, I guess I won’t be working here.”

O’Connor also shared that “It was really a father-daughter story with Deadshot and his daughter.” Of course, as fans will remember, Deadshot didn’t end up appearing in “The Suicide Squad.” Instead, leading man Idris Elba played Bloodsport, though like Deadshot he did have a few issues with his daughter.

DC Studios would doubtless look a lot different right now if O’Connor had been the one to direct “The Suicide Squad.” Without Gunn on that movie, he likely wouldn’t have made “Peacemaker” or “Creature Commandos.” He wouldn’t have become the co-head of DC Studios and he wouldn’t be directing “Superman.”

“The Accountant 2” releases in theaters April 25. The sequel is directed by Gavin O’Connor and written by Bill Dubuque. It stars Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Daniella Pineda, Allison Robertson, J.K. Simmons, Grant Harvey, and Andrew Howard.
