Casting Hartnett in The Batman 2 could renew interest in Two-Face due to his recent roles and popularity.

The Batman Part 2 villain details remain scarce, but one actor was rumored to be a contender for the Two-Face role. Now, new fan art imagines this actor as a grounded version of the classic DC Comics villain.

The Batman 2 is still in the pre-production stage, leaving fans plenty of time to speculate on who the villain will be. Last year, a rumor surfaced claiming Josh Hartnett was a potential casting choice for Two-Face, the iconic villain famous for his split personality and making critical choices by flipping his signature damaged coin. Since the rumor first emerged, there hasn’t been any official confirmation on The Batman 2 villain, though Hush and Clayface are frequently named characters in the rumor mill. Still, a digital artist created a new image that depicts Harnett as a version of Two-Face who would fit perfectly in director Matt Reeves’ Batman universe.

Joker 2’s Box Office Might Be A Repeat of Another DC Disaster

According to early estimates, things are not looking good for Joker 2, and might earn much less than its predecessor in the opening weekend.

Artist Jaxson Derr created an image that depicts Harnett as Two-Face by combining their own concept for the character’s damaged faced with an image of Hartnett from Black Mirror season 5 episode 3. Derr explained that they imagined what Two-Face would look like if his scars were envision by Mike Marino, the makeup designer responsible for transforming Colin Farrell into the Penguin for The Batman saga. “Im not sure if y’all quite understand how epic a #twoface design would look on #joshhartnett by @prorenfx,” Derr wrote.

Fan reactions to Derr’s artwork has been largely positive. One fan even noted that this depiction of Harnett as Two-Face fixes an issue they have with specific versions of the character. “I love that his mouth IS burnt and damaged, but his teeth and jaw aren’t exposed,” wrote Cody Lard. “Bugs me to death that he can still speak plainly in interpretations where half of his mouth is literally missing.” Another fan said they preferred this version of Two-Face over Aaron Eckhart’s depiction in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. “As much as I appreciate the design Nolan gave to Two-Face, it seems like he tried too hard to recreate the look from the comics, and he ended up exaggerating a little,” wrote Eduardo Franco.

The list of potential The Batman Part 2 villains is extensive. With Reeves recently confirming The Batman 2 will be set during winter, Mr. Freeze has emerged as a fan-favorite contender for the Caped Crusader’s next foe. Of course, this version of Mr. Freeze would likely be dramatically reinterpreted to fit in Reeves’ grounded Batman universe.

Still, despite being featured in Batman Forever and The Dark Knight, casting Hartnett could renew interest in Two-Face. Hartnett has experienced a renaissance of sorts with a recent role in Nolan’s Oppenheimer and as the lead in M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap. So, perhaps Reeves might want to capatilze on Hartnett’s renewed popularity and cast him as Two-Face in The Batman 2.

The Batman 2 is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 2, 2026.
