Comic book detectives have been around for countless decades. Some of the earliest examples of the prototypical comic book superheroes came from the pages of pulp comic book stories with characters like the Shadow or the Phantom. Pulp heroes were often focused on solving mysteries, investigating crimes, and facing off against violent criminals.

Detective work is one of the definitive aspects of many comic books, with DC Comics even taking its name from Detective Comics. Criminal investigations are commonplace in classic and contemporary comic book stories alike, and many of the heroes that fans know and love are best known for their incredible investigative abilities. While Marvel Comics tends to emphasize other aspects of its heroes, there are still plenty of Marvel characters renowned for their formidable detective skills. Whether they’re from DC, Marvel, or a smaller publisher, comic book detectives are staples of the medium.
